WHY WON’T MY WART GO AWAY?
Understanding Faulkner’s Needling for Persistent Plantar Warts

Plantar warts (also known as verrucae) can be one of the most frustrating foot conditions to treat. Many patients come into Bondi Podiatry after spending months — and sometimes years — trying multiple treatment methods with little success.

By the time we see them, many have already attempted:
• Over-the-counter acids and home remedies
• Cryotherapy (freezing treatments)
• Laser or acid treatments
• Swift microwave therapy
• Picking, filing, or covering the wart themselves

While these treatments can work well for some patients, certain warts become resistant, deeply embedded, or continue to recur despite repeated treatment.

This is where Faulkner’s Needling may be considered.

WHAT IS A PLANTAR WART?
Plantar warts are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which infects the outer layer of skin through tiny breaks or microtrauma. They are commonly picked up in shared barefoot environments such as:
• Gyms
• Change rooms
• Public showers
• Pools
• Yoga and pilates studios
• Beaches and communal areas

In active suburbs like Bondi, where many people regularly train barefoot, surf, swim, or exercise in shared environments, we frequently see persistent plantar warts in both adults and children.

Warts can present as:
• Thickened callused lesions on the sole of the foot
• Pain when walking or standing
• Small black dots (thrombosed capillaries)
• Clustered “mosaic” warts
• Tender lesions that feel like stepping on a stone

One of the biggest reasons plantar warts persist is because the virus can evade the body’s immune system. Surface treatments may remove layers of tissue, but sometimes fail to trigger a strong enough immune response to eliminate the virus completely.

This often explains why patients experience:
🚩Temporary improvement
🚩Recurrent lesions
🚩 Pain returning months later
🚩 Spread of the wart to surrounding areas

Some patients also have warts buried under thick skin or pressure areas, making them harder to treat with conventional methods alone.

Faulkner’s Needling is a minor surgical procedure designed to stimulate the body’s immune system to recognise and attack the HPV virus causing the wart.

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, meaning the area is numb and comfortable throughout treatment.

During the procedure:
👉The overlying hard skin is reduced
👉A sterile needle repeatedly punctures the wart tissue
👉This pushes viral particles deeper into the tissue
👉The immune system is stimulated to identify the virus and mount a response

Unlike treatments that simply destroy surface tissue, needling aims to address the underlying viral infection itself.

WHO IS IT SUITABLE FOR?
Faulkner’s Needling may be considered for patients with:
✔️ Persistent plantar warts
✔️ Warts resistant to cryotherapy or Swift treatment
✔️ Painful lesions affecting walking or exercise
✔️ Mosaic or clustered verrucae
✔️ Long-standing recurrent warts
✔️ Difficulty tolerating repeated surface treatments

At Bondi Podiatry, we commonly discuss needling for patients who are tired of repeated failed treatments and are looking for an alternative approach.

WHAT IS RECOVERY LIKE?
After the procedure, some tenderness and mild discomfort are expected for a few days as the immune response begins. Patients are generally able to return to normal daily activities relatively quickly, although high-impact activity may need to be modified temporarily depending on the size and location of the wart.

Follow-up appointments are important to monitor healing and assess the wart’s response over time.

WHY PROFESSIONAL ASSESSMENT MATTERS
Not every lesion on the foot is actually a wart. Corns, calluses, foreign body reactions, and other skin lesions can sometimes look very similar.

A proper assessment allows us to:
✅Confirm the diagnosis
✅Determine the depth and severity of the lesion
✅ Discuss all treatment options
✅Decide whether needling is appropriate
✅ Create an individualised treatment plan

At Bondi Podiatry, we tailor wart treatment to the individual patient, their activity levels, previous treatment history, and lifestyle goals.

If you’ve been struggling with a wart that simply won’t resolve despite cryotherapy, Swift treatment, or home remedies, Faulkner’s Needling may be an option worth discussing.

If you’re dealing with persistent foot, heel, tendon or lower limb pain, Shockwave Therapy offers a modern, non-invasive treatment option that helps stimulate your body’s natural healing response — without injections or surgery.

At Bondi Podiatry, we use Shockwave Therapy for a range of conditions including plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, shin splints, heel pain and chronic tendon overload injuries.

How does Shockwave Therapy work?

Shockwave Therapy delivers high-energy acoustic waves into the affected tissue. This creates a controlled “mechanical stress” that triggers a healing response at a cellular level.

Key mechanisms include:

👉 Increased blood flow (neovascularisation) – promotes delivery of oxygen and nutrients to damaged tissue
👉Stimulates collagen production – essential for tendon and fascia repair
👉 Breaks down chronic scar tissue & calcifications – helping restore normal tissue structure
👉 Pain modulation – reduces pain signalling by affecting nerve activity and substance P levels
👉Cellular regeneration (mechanotransduction) – activates the body’s natural repair processes in chronic injuries that have stopped healing on their own

Why patients choose it:

✅ Non-invasive and no needles or surgery
✅ Minimal downtime – return to activity quickly
✅Effective for long-standing “stubborn” injuries
✅ Works well alongside strengthening and rehab programs

It’s particularly beneficial for active individuals who want to stay moving while addressing the root cause of pain, not just the symptoms.

If you’ve been struggling with ongoing lower limb pain, Shockwave Therapy may be worth considering as part of your treatment plan.

It’s worth having it properly assessed. Head to our website to book an appointment today. www.bondipodiatry.com.au

❓ Is your toenail sore, red, or painful when you press on the side of it?

You might be dealing with an ingrown toenail — one of the most common problems we see at Bondi Podiatry.

For many people living in Bondi and the Eastern Suburbs, staying active is part of everyday life. Whether you’re running, training at the gym, spending long days on your feet, or your kids' and teenagers' are busy with the new cycle of sports seasons—from weekend football and netball to summer cricket and athletics—an ingrown toenail can quickly make simple activities uncomfortable.

It often starts as a small bit of discomfort along the nail edge… but over time it can become very painful, swollen, and even infected if it’s left untreated.

This is especially common for people in Bondi and the Eastern Suburbs who are always on their feet — running, training, working long hours, or wearing tight shoes.

⚠️ When ingrown toenails are ignored, they can lead to:

• Infection around the nail
• Increased swelling and redness
• Pain when walking or exercising
• Overgrowth of tissue around the nail (“Granulation Tissue")
• Recurring ingrown toenails

In more severe or chronic cases, the nail may continue growing into the skin repeatedly and require a permanent solution.

This can involve a minor procedure called a partial nail avulsion, where the problematic edge of the nail is removed permanently so it doesn’t grow back ingrown again.

The good news?
👉 Most ingrown toenails are quick and easy to treat when caught early.

At Bondi Podiatry, we commonly treat ingrown nails by:

✔️ Removing the painful nail edge
✔️ Cleaning the nail groove
✔️ Treating infection if present
✔️ Performing minor nail surgery for recurring cases

Many patients feel immediate relief after treatment.

If your toenail is sore, swollen, or becoming infected, it’s best to have it assessed before it worsens.

Lately we have seen an increase in Fungal nails, with the growing amount of questions and calls we thought we would put up a little blog post on it to help.

So living in beautiful Bondi comes with so many perks — beach walks, ocean swims, coastal runs and an active outdoor lifestyle. But there’s one thing we see regularly at Bondi Podiatry:

🚨 Fungal toenail infections and athlete’s foot are incredibly common in beachside suburbs. 🚨

WHY?

👉 Warm, Humid Coastal Climate 👈 Fungus thrives in warm, moist environments. Between ocean swims, sweaty trainers, humid summer days and damp sand, your feet are often in the perfect environment for fungal growth — even if you’re super hygienic.

👟 Active & Busy Lifestyles - Bondi locals are on the go — early morning runs, gym sessions, Pilates, surfing, long workdays, then straight into social plans.

More activity means:
🚩 Increased sweating
🚩 Long hours in enclosed shoes
🚩 Shared gym and change room facilities
🚩 Less time for shoes to fully dry

That combination makes fungal nail infections (onychomycosis) and tinea pedis (athlete’s foot) far more likely.

🦶 Nail Trauma from Sport - Running, HIIT training and tight footwear can cause repetitive nail trauma. Even minor lifting of the toenail creates space for fungus to enter and settle.

⏳Timing - We get it — life is busy. But early fungal infections often start as subtle yellowing, thickening or slight nail changes. The longer they’re left untreated, the harder they are to clear.

At Bondi Podiatry, we don’t believe in quick fixes. Fungal nail treatment requires consistency and professional management for long-term results.

Our treatment options include:

✔️ Medical-grade topical antifungal therapy
✔️ Regular nail debridement (thinning and reducing thickened fungal nails)
✔️ Ongoing monitoring over several months for consistent results
✔️ Prevention strategies to stop reinfection
✔️ KeryFlex nail restoration for patients wanting a cosmetic uplift

Over-the-counter treatments often fail because:

👉The nail is too thick for pe*******on
👉 There’s ongoing trauma or reinfection
👉The treatment isn’t continued long enough

With structured, long-term podiatry care, we physically reduce the fungal load and improve medication pe*******on — giving you a much better chance of clear, healthy nail regrowth.

If you’re noticing:

🚩 Yellow, white or brown nail discolouration
🚩 Thickened or crumbly toenails
🚩 Lifting of the nail
🚩 Persistent athlete’s foot

It’s worth having it properly assessed. Head to our website to book an appointment today. www.bondipodiatry.com.au

Outer Ankle Pain? It Could Be Peroneal Tendinopathy
Pain along the outside of your ankle or foot can make walking, exercising and everyday movement uncomfortable. A common cause is peroneal tendinopathy — irritation of the tendons that help stabilise your ankle.

Peroneal tendinopathy occurs when the peroneal tendons, which run along the outside of the ankle and foot, become overloaded or irritated. These tendons are essential for ankle stability, balance and controlling foot movement during walking and running.
When placed under repetitive strain or sudden increases in activity, these tendons can become painful and slow to heal.
This condition is often linked to ankle sprains, overuse, sudden changes in activity, unsupportive footwear or foot biomechanics.

Common symptoms include:
• Pain or tenderness on the outside of the ankle
• Swelling or stiffness
• Pain that worsens with walking or exercise
• Feeling unstable on your feet

If you’re experiencing outer ankle pain or symptoms of peroneal tendinopathy, early treatment can make all the difference. At Bondi Podiatry, we take the time to assess what’s causing your pain and tailor treatment to suit you. Management may include footwear advice, strengthening exercises, custom orthotics and shockwave therapy.

Shockwave therapy can be used as part of a personalised treatment approach — ensuring it’s appropriate for your condition and recovery goals. If ongoing ankle or foot pain is affecting your mobility, shockwave therapy may be an effective option to help relieve pain, improve function and get you back to moving comfortably.

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses targeted high-energy acoustic (sound) waves to stimulate blood flow and support tendon healing. It’s often used for ongoing or stubborn tendon pain and can help reduce discomfort while improving mobility and function.

If ankle pain is slowing you down, we’re here to help.

🌞 Summer Warts: Causes, Prevention & Treatment Options at Bondi Podiatry 🌞

Summer in Sydney means beaches, pools, gyms and barefoot living — but it also means a spike in plantar warts. Warts love warm, moist environments and are easily picked up during the summer months, especially around pools, change rooms and shared showers.

If you’ve noticed a painful or stubborn spot on the sole of your foot, early treatment is key.

What Are Plantar Warts?
Plantar warts, also known as verrucae, are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus enters through tiny breaks in the skin and causes thickened, rough lesions on the soles of the feet.
Unlike corns or calluses, warts often have black pin-point dots (clotted blood vessels) and are painful when squeezed from the sides they generally sit deeper in the skin due to pressure from walking.

🌡 Why Warts Are More Common in Summer
👉Summer creates the perfect storm for wart transmission:
👉Warm, damp environments encourage viral survival
👉Increased barefoot exposure in public areas
👉Small cuts and softened skin allow easier entry of the virus
👉Children, teens, athletes and anyone using communal facilities are particularly at risk.

🩺 Wart Treatment Options at Bondi Podiatry
At Bondi Podiatry, wart treatment is never one-size-fits-all. Your podiatrist will assess the size, depth, location and duration of the wart before recommending the most effective treatment plan.

🔥 Debridement & Chemical Treatments 🔥
This is often the first step in wart management. These treatments encourage your immune system to recognise and fight the virus. Thickened skin is carefully reduced to expose the wart, followed by targeted application of medical-grade treatments such as:
👉Salicylic Acid
👉Silver Nitrate
👉Nitric Acid

🪡 Needling (Faulkner’s Needling)
For stubborn or long-standing warts, needling is a highly effective option. Performed under local anaesthetic, this technique stimulates a strong immune response that helps the body eliminate the virus — even at other sites on the foot. This treatment is ideal for patients who have tried multiple methods without success or simply wish for a shorter treatment timeframe.

🛡 How to Prevent Summer Warts
Prevention is always better than treatment. Simple habits can significantly reduce your risk:
👉Wear thongs or slides in public showers and pool areas
👉Keep feet clean and dry
👉Avoid sharing towels, shoes or socks
👉Cover existing warts to prevent spread

🗓 What to Expect From Treatment
Wart treatment usually requires weekly or fortnightly appointments, depending on the method used. Because warts involve the immune system, consistency is key — but with professional care, most patients achieve excellent outcomes.

Warts can be stubborn, painful and frustrating — but you don’t have to manage them alone. Our experienced podiatrists will guide you through the most effective treatment options to get you back to pain-free summer living.

If you have any questions feel free to contact us on (02) 8971 1682 or head to https://www.bondipodiatry.com.au/ to book an appointment.

Fungal Nails vs. Nail Trauma

Understanding the differences and treatment options

Lately, we’ve had a lot of questions about fungal nails versus nail trauma, so we wanted to share a simple explanation to help clear things up.

When it comes to nail health, it’s quite common to notice changes such as thickening, discolouration, or a change in texture. These changes are often caused by either a fungal nail infection or nail trauma, and while they can look similar, the underlying cause (and treatment) can be quite different.

What causes nail thickening and yellowing?

Both fungal infections and trauma can lead to thickened, yellowed nails.

Fungal nail infections (also known as onychomycosis) tend to develop gradually. Over time, the nail may become yellow or brown, thick, brittle, crumbly, and distorted. The nail can also lose its natural shine and sometimes lift away from the nail bed.

Nail trauma, on the other hand, can result from a single injury (such as dropping something on your toe) or from repeated pressure over time, often caused by tight footwear or certain activities. Trauma can cause the nail to thicken, curve, and become misshapen as it responds to ongoing stress.

The link between trauma and fungal infections

Trauma doesn’t just change the appearance of the nail — if left unmanaged, it can also increase the risk of developing a secondary fungal infection. Damage to the nail plate or nail bed can create small entry points for fungi, meaning trauma-related nail changes can sometimes progress into a “double issue” over the long term. This is why early assessment and treatment are so important.

Diagnosing the cause

A podiatrist will start by assessing your nail visually and reviewing your medical and nail history. While experience and appearance can provide clues, the most accurate way to diagnose a fungal nail is through microscopy and culture, where a nail sample is sent to a lab. Faster in-clinic tests are also available, offering a quick (though slightly less definitive) result.

Treatment approaches: fungal nails vs. thickened nails

Fungal nails
Treatment may include topical antifungal treatments, oral medication, laser therapy, or a combination of approaches. Because nails grow slowly, treatment requires patience and consistency to achieve the best outcome.

Thickened nails caused by trauma
Treatment focuses on reducing nail thickness, improving comfort, and preventing further damage. This may include professional nail reduction and a medical pedicure (Medi-Pedi). If the nail matrix has been permanently damaged, the nail may remain thickened, but symptoms can usually be well managed.

Cosmetic support during treatment: KeryFlex nail reconstruction

For those who are concerned about the appearance of their nails during treatment, Bondi Podiatry offers KeryFlex®, a medical-grade nail reconstruction system.
KeryFlex allows the nail to be cosmetically restored while the underlying fungal infection or trauma is being treated. It creates a natural-looking nail, helping improve confidence and appearance throughout the treatment process.

No matter the cause, early intervention makes a big difference. A podiatrist can help identify what’s going on and guide you towards the most appropriate treatment plan to keep your nails healthy and comfortable.
