Often, the sensation during a stretch can be more important than simply the range of motion you achieve. How your body feels during the movement—whether it’s relaxed, supported, or challenged—can influence how deeply a stretch impacts your muscles, joints, and overall mobility.

It’s about being present with the body, listening to it, and finding that balance between pushing your limits and respecting your body’s signals.

This is why breath with stretch is important.

Do you focus on that aspect when you stretch or move?

FST for body builders is a great preventative modality as it not only helps with increasing blood flow to muscle tissue but also helps with the increase of flexibility in joints where areas such as the shoulders can be a limiting factor when it comes to overhead movement.

Improving performance when training and getting in great depth in the hips for squats can contribute to better long-term results and reducing the risk of injuries.

When conducting a shoulder assessment using FST, the primary focus is on the fascia surrounding the shoulder and shoulder blade area, along with the surrounding soft tissues, muscles, and joints.

Observing the alignment of the shoulders and the scapulae (shoulder blades) in relation to the spine or any asymmetries, such as rounded shoulders or elevated scapulae, this might indicate fascial restrictions or muscle imbalances.

It is common for those who find discomfort mid back or the neck present itself during passive movement. Very slow movement to ease tension is key to allow areas to release tension and tenderness.

It is very subtle but do you see the slight change that makes that shoulder look at ease?

Moving in a particular way to avoid pain may prolong injuries and pain which can cause dysfunction and imbalances of the body over time.

Let’s not treat the symptom but pay attention to areas that need attending to whether it’s to mobilise, stretch or strengthen.
