At first this makes no sense..you think surely if I put my baby down later they’ll sleep in longer because they’ll be tired..

What happens when your baby gets overtired is that they release the stress hormone cortisol which makes it harder to relax and settle into sleep and they also wake easily.

So when they come to the light part of sleep in the early morning it’s easier for them to fully wake and not be able to resettle to sleep.

So if naps haven’t gone well for the day try an early bedtime to catch up and help with early rising 👌🏽

Ever heard of an overtired cycle?

Has your little one been catnapping for a while and you’re trying to follow their age appropriate awake window and it’s not working?? They may be in a bit of an overtired cycle. Their sleep debt has been building up and they’re tired earlier than they usually would be.

Try doing some assisted naps however you can for a few days to get on top of the overtiredness.

How many wakes overnight is “normal”?

The first thing we need to normalise is that if it’s working for you and your family then you don’t need to change anything. Just because someone else’s baby might be sleeping through already doesn’t mean you need to change anything if you’re happy with the way things are.

I’ve been getting a few questions about how many times babies are waking through the night so I thought I’d break it down so you have a bit more of an idea about what I would expect to see.

Feeds overnight

0 - 6 weeks = 2 - 4
6 - 12 weeks = 2
3 - 6 months = 1 - 2
6 - 12 months = 0 - 1
12 months + = 0

All babies are different so this is just a rough guide. If things are working well and they are slightly outside this then that is totally fine! If they’re outside of this and you’re wanting to make changes please reach out and we can look at how we can help to slowly reduce these.

Nearly wrote second wine…definitely still in the Christmas spirit over here 😂

Let’s talk about a second wind as there will probably be a few over the silly season.

I often hear people talk about how their little one seemed a little tired but then they suddenly got a second wind and weren’t tired anymore.

There’s a simple reason for this. When our bodies are overtired they produce cortisol and adrenaline to help it cope and this is what makes it look like our little ones get a second wind or get a little crazy as some describe.

So watch out for tired signs and even if you don’t see them, still try to put them down at their regular time to help stop them getting overtired and then becoming harder to settle.

SIDS

It’s something we never want to think about but something I think we should know a little more about.

Red Nose Australia] explains it with the photo above as the overlap of three factors.

- Critical development period. This is a baby under 1 year of age, particularly under 6 months.

- A vulnerable infant. A baby with an underlying weakness or abnormality. They still don’t know enough about how to determine if a baby is a vulnerable infant beforehand so best to err on the side of caution. They know babies who were born preterm or whose mothers smoked during pregnancy are more vulnerable.

- Exogenous stress or external factors. These are things like being exposed to to***co smoke, tummy or side sleeping, overheating, head covering or an upper respiratory infection or illness.

When all 3 overlap this is when SIDS can occur. Because we can’t control the critical development period and if they are a vulnerable infant we need to make sure we’re looking at what external factors we can control.

- Place them on their back for sleeping
- Reduce exposure to second hand smoking
- Remove head coverings
- Remove loose bedding
- Use a firm, flat mattress
- Use an appropriate TOG sleepbag or sleepsuit for the room temperature

It’s not a very nice subject to talk about but it’s something I’m always looking for with clients and hoping this helps someone who might not have known this.

Check out Red Nose Australia’s website for lots of great information about safe sleep practices.

Wanting to introduce a comforter but not sure how?

Red Nose Guidelines recommends waiting until at least 7 months before introducing a small breathable comforter.

There are some real benefits to introducing one.

💫It may seem silly but you can tuck it down your top when you’re walking around the house for a few days before you introduce it to get your scent on it. This way your baby is going to be extra comforted by it.

💫Separation anxiety can peak at 9, 12, 18 and 24 months so having that comforter in the cot can help reduce some of that separation anxiety.

💫It’s a positive sleep association. When travelling on holidays or simply just out for the day and doing a nap on the go it can be a great sleep cue.

💫You can get comforters where it’s easy to attach dummies, that way your little one can easily find it in the night and replace their dummy themselves. My daughter loves her

If bedtime has become a battle and you’d like some help please reach out and send me a DM.

Did you know maternal melatonin (the hormone that makes you feel sleepy) transfers after birth! It helps babies stay nice and sleepy and drift off easily.

It starts to wear off around 3 weeks and so babies may need a little more help falling asleep than they were previously.

Each baby will be slightly different but around week 8 is when they will start producing their own melatonin 🙌🏽.

Light blocks the production of melatonin so we want their sleep space to be nice and dark to help them get sleepy.

Tag a mama to be or with a newborn so they know to enjoy those sleepy first weeks and that it’s completely developmentally normal if they seem to be more wakeful for a couple of weeks.

Ever wondered why you can have the tv loud after the kids go to sleep or go into their room and put the washing away and they don’t wake but if you try to go to the toilet in the early hours of the morning and the floors creak they wake up?

That’s because our hormones play a big role in our sleep. The deepest phase of sleep is before midnight with the sleepy hormone at it’s highest and after that the awake hormone starts slowly increasing waking us up ready for the day.

This is one of the reasons why we want to make sure our little ones are in bed nice and early so they can get as much of that deep restorative sleep before midnight 👌🏽

Having white noise playing all night is great to help block some of those noises out in the early hours of the morning when they’re in a lighter sleep.

You finally feel like you’ve got into a rhythm and in a routine that’s working well and then all of a sudden they come down with something and everything is thrown out the window 🙈

This is the time when they need lots of extra love and attention. They may need extra sleep or extra cuddles or fall asleep on you on the lounge and that’s perfectly ok!

The only thing I would say is if they are sleeping a lot in the day we just want to be mindful they are getting enough hydration so you may need to wake them to try to get a feed in or some water.

They also may need a little more hands on help than usual to get to sleep as well.

Once they’re starting to feel a bit better you can start to get the routine back on track.

Always check with your GP if you’ve got any concerns.

Is all baby food created equal?

Short answer no..

I’m not here to bag out easy store bought options. They’re great to have in the cupboard for when you don’t have time to cook or easy to chuck in the bag when running out the door. They definitely have their place!

I always looked at the ingredients list to make sure there were no nasties in there but what I hadn’t even thought to look at were the percentages of what was in it.

A balanced diet means we’re getting lots of micronutrients that all help promote sleep. Ones to try to include at lunch from 6 months and in every main meal from 10 months are low GI carbs and protein. They play a big role in sleep by maintaining a stable blood sugar level as low blood sugar levels can release adrenaline at night causing wake ups.

When I looked at the options in the supermarket most ranged in only 5 - 12% protein and low in carbs. Some of them the highest ingredient was water!!

I found it easy to cook up a few freezer meals that I could rotate between. My go-to were chicken and vegetable risotto and a beef and vegetable slow cooker with rice but mostly just mashing what we were having was the easiest.
