Friday morning was a great morning at the Marketing & Me networking group meeting with like-minded business owners. I’m grateful to have attracted three new business owners interested in the “Growth Mindset” topic and eager to network with other business owners.
The discussions were engaging, and the flow of examples of fixed vs. growth mindset set the stage. Many of us recognised how we’ve experienced a fixed mindset in industries where a growth mindset was needed.
We all agreed that our thoughts and feelings shape how we show up, and around 90% of our thoughts are negative and disempowering. Common themes included overthinking, self-doubt, feeling unseen or unheard, not expressing opinions, scarcity mindset, fear of failure, fear of success, imposter syndrome, inadequacy, fear of judgement, inability to relax, constant need for productivity, resistance to change, insecurity, a victim mentality, and feeling small.
We discussed the origins of our beliefs and the transformative process of changing them by identifying the root cause or “bottom” belief. Beliefs are like a deck of cards—once the foundational belief is uncovered, true transformation can happen, with remarkable results. For example, physical pain has been alleviated in some cases once the underlying emotional trauma and belief, such as “not feeling good enough,” is addressed. Our subconscious programming, often rooted in past experiences or inherited beliefs, greatly influences our thoughts, actions, and ultimately how we live and the mindset we hold.
Another important discussion was around achieving success while honouring personal values, such as family time, intimate relationships, and self-love, to live a balanced and fulfilling life. Many have successful businesses at the expense of their personal lives, often leading to burnout and health issues, including the mental health effects of loneliness. This raised the powerful question: What is driving this behaviour? What void is it filling? Do we even know what success feels like? For some, feelings of being rich or fulfilled are unfamiliar, yet embodying these feelings is crucial for fostering a growth mindset. If you can’t feel it, how can you become it? If you don’t feel successful, how will you recognise or achieve success?
During the workshop, we explored how the relationships in our lives impact our feelings and beliefs, and recognised insights that reveal beliefs potentially limiting a growth mindset across all areas of life. What patterns or triggers keep resurfacing? We learned how to identify and change limiting beliefs, realising that negative beliefs can be transformed and that becoming conscious of triggers, patterns, and underlying beliefs is essential. I appreciated the feedback from attendees who found empowerment in knowing that negative beliefs can be changed and the importance of becoming aware of them.
