Have you heard about the “Dark Side” of Counting Macros? 🚫💪

Hey, fam! 👋 Today, I’m shining a light on a topic that’s been weighing heavy on my mind: the hidden dangers of counting macros for weight loss. 📊

It’s time to peel back the curtain and expose the truth about how this seemingly innocent practice can lead to serious issues with food and body image. ⚖️

For starters, there’s the element of OBSESSION. When constantly fixating on hitting those precise numbers for protein, carbs, and fats, it’s easy for our minds to become consumed with food. 🍽️

Every meal becomes a calculation, every snack a source of anxiety. 😫 Before you know it, you’re living in a state of perpetual food stress, and that’s no way to thrive.

In my experience of working with clients who have been through the meet grinder with this type of dieting, counting Macros can be a slippery slope to disordered eating. 🏔️

What begins as innocent tracking can quickly spiral into a harmful cycle of restriction and guilt. 🚫🍩 You start labelling foods as “good” or “bad” based solely on their macro content, ignoring the bigger picture of health and balance. 🍔🥗 It’s a dangerous game that nobody wins.

So, where do we go from here? 🤔

It is 100% possible (and in fact much easier) to achieve sustainable weight loss and vibrant health WITHOUT dieting.

Finding this broke my heart 💔 This was me as a teenage girl, believing that the only way to have a body I was comfortable in was to try and starve herself back to health.

The media and advertising we were exposed to growing up as young women told us that we have to eat like a bird to be worthy and to have a body we could be proud of. We were convinced that we were not beautiful unless we were tiny and flawless. And appallingly, none of this messaging said anything about the importance of being HEALTHY, pain free, energetic and happy, above being SKINNY.

It’s no wonder women all over the world struggle so much with body image, eating disorders, weight issues, depression and anxiety 🤲

What you were taught in school, or leant about on TV, or saw on the internet about Nutrition growing up was, unfortunately, very flawed. The food pyramid is backwards, and we are never taught as women how to eat to support our hormones. The nutrients in our every day food are severely lacking, rates of food & lifestyle related disease are at an all time high.

Growing up, I wanted so badly to understand what my body needed to be healthy, and to thrive. It took me over a decade to find it.

This is exactly what drove me to study my four year bachelors degree in Health Science + Naturopathy.

Finally I found the tools to heal my body and to help heal other women who are still greatly struggling with their weight, hormones, energy, anxiety and body image. Offering this help to my clients, and seeing their lives change dramatically brings me the greatest joy imaginable 💫

🌱💩 Let’s talk gut health! 💩🌱
Did you know that constipation and diarrhoea could be signs of an imbalance in your gut microbiome? Yep, it’s true! 🤯 Our gut is home to trillions of bacteria, yeast, and other microorganisms, and when the balance of these critters gets thrown off, it can wreak havoc on our digestion and, you guessed it, our weight 🌀

Constipation, where it feels like everything’s at a standstill, and diarrhoea, where things are moving too fast, are both red flags that something’s amiss in your gut 🚩

This imbalance, known as dysbiosis, can also present with symptoms like bloating, gas, food intolerances, fatigue, tummy pain, heartburn, mood swings, and weakened immunity. 🌟 It can be caused by a poor, low-nutrient diet, stress, overuse of antibiotics, genetics, immune dysfunction and a stack of other factors 🍔😓

Constipation is more than just feeling stuck by the way – failure to move your bowels at least once per day can result in the reabsorption of toxins, metabolised hormones & waste products back into your blood stream. This creates lethargy, mood changes, hormonal imbalance, weight gain and increased gut issues as your liver does its best to recover and filter the rubbish back out the second (or third, or fourth..) time round 😬

Lose stool & diarrhoea often means you’ll struggle to absorb the nutrients in your food quickly enough before the bowel is evacuated. Low nutrient absorption means low energy, fatigue, anxiety, low immune function, weight gain, digestive issues and in some cases, chronic disease & inflammation.

Top 5 Clinical Tips to Heal Stretch Marks

1. Hydration is KEY 💦 Keep your skin hydrated from the inside out by drinking plenty of water (2.5-3L daily). Hydrated skin is more elastic and less prone to stretch marks.

2. Nourish with Oils 🧴 Treat your skin to nourishing oil massages - coconut, almond, and rosehip are my go to. These oils are rich in vitamins and antioxidants that help improve skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of stretch marks over time.

3. Healthy Diet = Healthy Skin 🍑 Fuel your body with nutrit-rich foods; in particular, fresh fruits high in antioxidants (berries, citrus, melons), green veggies, and lean proteins. Good quality collagen powder is another favourite dietary add in and can be mixed into just about anything as it’s relatively tasteless.

4. Gentle Exfoliation + Witch Hazel 🧽 Incorporate gentle exfoliation into your skincare routine to promote cell turnover and fade stretch marks gradually. 1️⃣ You Skip Meals

In my clinical experience, blood sugar balance is ESSENTIAL for weight loss. Skipping meals sets you up for some pretty strong cravings later in the day, that are really hard to fight. How many times have you gone on a restrictive diet for a while, and then binged like crazy right afterwards?

We set ourselves up to fail when our blood sugar experiences a sudden rise (when we do decide to eat) and then a massive crash (when we skip meals). That crash drives our body to seek out quick release energy to rebalance blood sugars ASAP in the forms of sweets, potato chips, pizza, chocolate, lollies… all the things you are trying so hard to avoid

2️⃣ You’re focussing on CALORIC value above NUTRITIONAL value

To meet daily calorie requirements, you could eat…

A double big mac, medium fries, a vanilla thick shake and a Carmen’s protein bar (Total: 1650 calories)
OR
2 eggs on sourdough bread + spinach & hollandaise, 5 x zucchini fritters + beef rissole with hummus & chilli oil, a banana protein smoothie, lamb bolognaise sauce on konjac spaghetti + a side-salad + tangy poppyseed dressing & a Noway Collagen Chocolate Mousse (Total: 1670 calories)

If you don’t address the root cause of your cravings, they’ll still control your eating habits. Heard of ‘leaky gut’? 😅 If you’ve struggled with weight loss for a long time, there’s a good chance this is contributing to the problem ❌

Poor gut health = crap digestion + literal leakage of food particles into the blood stream = inflammation + low vitamin/nutrient absorption  = a whole host a problems (bloating, gas, 💩 problems, reflux, mental health issues thanks to the gut-brain-axis, aaand, you guessed it, weight gain).

When our gut isn’t happy, it’s very hard to lose weight.

But don’t fret! Here’s my Top 3 Tips for Gut Health:

1.  Feed the GOOD bugs & add more to your diet – Probiotic-rich fermented foods, fibre, H20 & prebiotics. Inulin & green banana powder are great prebiotics. If you decide to buy a probiotic capsule, I’d still choose refrigerated versions, as generally speaking, they’re better quality in my opinion. There are absolutely exceptions to that rule, but without a tailored naturopathic prescription, the safer bet is a fridge-friendly product 💊

2.  Lightly soak & wash fruit & veg in diluted Apple Cider Vinegar to reduce pesticide residue (or go Organic wherever you can). Some might argue that trace amounts of pesticides have no impact upon health, but I ask you this – do we really know what a lifetime of pesticides and chemicals does to our gut and overall health?

3.  The less processed, the better. Go wholefoods over packaged/refined high sugar products, with preservatives & ingredients that no one can pronounce.

These tips will get you on the right track, but know this: For many women this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Believe me, if I could help you fix your gut via a few Instagram posts, I would – the unfortunate reality is each individual’s gut is TOTALLY UNIQUE. Your gut microbiome is as one-of-a-kind as your fingerprint. No kidding. And if you really want to get your gut happy again, personalised treatment is the quickest way there ⏱️

If I could speak with my adolescent self, here’s what I’d tell her about dieting, anxiety and navigating the chaos of understanding your body and what it needs as a young woman:

1️⃣ There is a difference between being fit & healthy and being skinny with an undiagnosed eating disorder. Starving yourself and eating less than 1200 calories per day as a developing woman is NOT the way to go about any sort of weight loss of health improvement. This stress you are putting your body through will actually make your health struggles WORSE and mess up your hormones.

2️⃣ Eating more protein, fresh fruit/veg, healthy fats and whole foods will give you way more success than trying to stick to some ridiculous meal replacement shake or strict diet program.

3️⃣ You have intense sugar/carb cravings and an upset tummy because your Gut is NOT HAPPY. See a Naturopath NOW and save yourself 10 years of struggling with acne & weight fluctuation.

That’s 3… but I have one more! 😂

4️⃣ Research stress management techniques, meditation and the work of Eckhart Tolle NOW to save yourself from future panic attacks following extreme burnout.

Feel totally powerless against your snacking or binging habits? Try out my Top 4 strategies 👀👇

1. UP YOUR PROTEIN 🥩

This one has made a MASSIVE difference for me over the years. Get a good serving of protein with your main meals (red meat, tofu, eggs, tempeh, soaked lentils/beans, salmon, chicken). If you’re still peckish afterwards, opt for a scoop or two of good quality protein powder (with plant mylk or in a smoothie) to help you feel fuller & more satisfied for longer.

2. START FIXING YOUR GUT 🥦

This is a big one that takes a bit more effort than just ‘eating healthy’, though a great place to start is often eating more fermented foods, prebiotics (leeks, onion, asparagus, oats, apples, garlic) & fibre from wholefoods.

3. PLAN AHEAD FOR SUCCESS 📈

Stock your pantry & fridge with healthier snack options like homemade popcorn, smoothie ingredients (frozen berries, cacao, avocado, protein powder), apple & nut butter, ATP Science choc/vanilla mousse & fresh chopped veggies and hummus (try Pilpel Chilli Lemon Hummus – it’ll blow your mind. Usually I HATE hummus!)

4. JOURNAL 📔

Use the following prompts: Why do I want to snack right now? Am I hungry? Bored? Tired? Anxious? Do I crave something specific (sweet, salty, carby, crunchy) – what other healthier options do I have to satisfy this type of craving? If I’m snacking/binging because I’m stressed, tired or anxious, what else could I do for myself to address these feelings? Is this a symptom of my stress or mindset? And should I seek support for this?

Sorry to burst your bubble 🫧 but restrictive dieting patterns could be seriously sabotaging your weight loss goals 🫣

HERE’S WHY 👀

1. Binge eating is a very real risk for all restrictive diets. Your body has become very accustomed to eating a certain way for a long time, and suddenly changing EVERYTHING you eat puts a lot of stress on your system. Many of us have been here before - we start a diet, we stick to it for a week, we miss our favourite foods, we’re HUNGRY, our diet provides even less nutrients than it did before, aaaaaand… we binge eat. BOOM - we feel like we’ve failed, we give up, and we’re back to square one.

2. We aren’t addressing the route cause. The gut and microbiome play a massive role in weight loss and 9/10 times, the weight won’t shift long term based purely on calorie restriction alone. Hormones are another key area that get neglected - and they have a very real role to play in assuring your weight loss success.

3. We’re not looking at the bigger picture: NUTRITION. How are we getting in all the vital nutrients, vitamins and minerals required for HEALTHY weight loss and body recovery? Losing weight is a huge task for your body and proper detox support is absolutely vital. The liver in particular needs a lot of love and support as accumulated toxins are released from fat tissue and need removal. Without optimum nutrition low satiety, low energy and brain fog are very likely to sabotage your efforts.

4. It’s our body’s job to maintain a balanced equilibrium - shifting over to starvation mode by having fewer than 1200 calories per day (a bare minimum for most women) pretty quickly puts your body into a survival state. Here it will naturally try to get itself back to where it had been sitting previously, as this had been the ‘safe zone’ up until you decided to start a strict diet. The second you start eating normally again, we’ll watch those numbers on the scale shoot back up.

But here’s the GOOD news: I know for a fact that there IS a sustainable way to lose weight and keep it off. And guess what? It has NOTHING to do with dieting, calorie counting or restrictive eating 😮‍💨

TOP 3 *NATUROPATH APPROVED* WAYS TO COPE WITH ANXIETY… that have nothing to do with eating your feelings 🫣

I get it. Life is incredibly stressful. And it is SO easy to just reach for that thing that gives us the quick hit of endorphins, just to push through (hello Kit Kats, red wine, potato chips and takeaway pizza 😳).

BUT! There are absolutely solutions to our anxiety that do NOT have to compromise our weight loss goals.

This one’s for you, all my emotional eaters out there! I used to ‘eat my feelings’ for comfort too 🖐️

Goals for 2024? 👀🌏⭐️
Here’s a little behind the scenes teaser from this year’s vision board - I find visual imagery really useful for staying on track with my goals (even when motivation seems low at times! 😅) and wanted to share something with you that’s been super beneficial for my own transformation and personal development in recent years 👀

🌱 CHALLENGE: Give yourself 30 minutes to create your own vision board this week, and put it up somewhere in your home that you’ll see every day, or save it as your laptop/phone screen background.

The power of suggestion and intention is absolutely relevant to achieving your goals! You might be surprised by what your subconscious has focused on achieving for you when you look back on December 31st, 2024 😉

Here’s some questions to ask yourself before you start:

🌻 What do I want more of this year?
🌻 What kind of experiences would I like to have?
🌻 Which people do I want to surround myself with more?
🌻 What do I want my health to look like by December 31st?
🌻 What do I want to intentionally create more space for in my life?
