This World Sepsis Day we’re bringing attention to a life-threatening illness that hospitalised 84,000 Australians in 2022-23.

Sepsis is when your body has an extreme response to an infection. People with sepsis say they feel very sick (the worst they have ever felt) and get sick very quickly.

Symptoms can include:
- difficulty breathing
- confusion
- low or no urine
- fever or chills
- rapid heart rate
- a new rash or blue, grey, pale or blotchy skin.

Any kind of infection, including influenza (flu), wound and skin infections, and urinary tract infections (UTIs) can cause sepsis.

Flu activity is high right now and the risk of sepsis is highest during the peak of the flu season.

If you feel unwell or are concerned, visit your doctor or call healthdirect on 1800 022 222, even if you have already seen a doctor.

If you are very sick, go to a hospital emergency department or call Triple Zero (000).

Don’t be afraid to ask ‘could it be sepsis?’
