My workplace yesterday. Attending a Cultural Leadership Camp for Indigenous Students. Surrounded by deadly high school students, teachers, ACLO, elders & community members. Leading the Welcome to Country, Offering Yoga on Country & yarning as an elder & aunty on Dharawal Country. There was weaving, yarning circles, possum skin cloak making & positive connections made. Left with my spirit & soul full & abundant. ❤️💛🖤 🧘🏽‍♀️ 👣

As a yoga teacher I’ve always been curious about restorative Yoga. So today I went as a student & participated in an 90 minute restorative yoga workshop. I was encouraged to shift from a state of ‘doing’ to simply ‘being’, and experience a profound stillness in the mind and a deep settling of the body.

Restorative Yoga involves getting comfortable and holding postures for lengthy periods of time. Props are used to ensure you’re comfortable and supported to fully allow the body to release and surrender into each pose. The practice stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system which slows the heart rate, regulates blood pressure and deeply relaxes the body. Overall I did enjoy the practice and feel confident in trying such teachings with my students. 🧘🏽‍♀️

Such a wonderful opportunity to teach yoga at the local community preschool. It was cats, cows, dogs & trees, with sounds. Bubble & balloon blowing with music & finally finishing off with a butterfly friend who hugs & affirms you are loved & you are enough ❤️💛🖤 🐱🐶 🐄 🪾🦋🧘🏽‍♀️

As soon as Aunty Jacqui joined the Mental Health Aware Yoga training last year, I knew that I wanted to invite her on the podcast to speak about her life and work.

Aunty Jacqui Jarrett (she/her) is a proud Dharawal & Gumbaynggirr woman, elder & traditional owner of the Sydney Basin in Australia.

Her yoga practice is intrinsically tied to her cultural obligations and responsibilities as a custodian of the land, and through the practice of yoga, she shows continual cultural connections, practices and knowledge of First Nations people.

In our conversation on the podcast Aunty Jacqui shares about how it wasn’t until she found trauma sensitive and Mental Health Aware Yoga that she finally started to see herself represented in contemporary yoga. She also shares about the ways that she brings yoga onto Country and how she has been applying the principles of Mental Health Aware Yoga in this space.

We also explore the similarities and differences that Aunty Jacqui sees between yogic practices and wisdom and the wisdom and practices of Australia’s First Nations people (this is super interesting and a perspective that I hadn’t heard before).

Truly it is an honour to have shared the teachings of Mental Health Aware Yoga with Aunty Jacqui and I’m excited to share this episode with you today.

Feel grateful & humble to attend my second year at the Indigenous Su***de Prevention Forum offering trauma-informed mental health aware yoga in the wellbeing space. The Australian Indigenous Psychology Association recognises First Nations grassroots organisations across Australia are continuing to lead the way with implementing culturally safe, trauma informed su***de prevention initiatives. And understanding these initiatives are crucial in preventing su***des & fostering resilience within our communities. ❤️💛🖤
