Falls

Each year one in three people aged over 65 will have a fall. And falls are one of the most significant health challenges faced by older Australians. In 2017-2018, people over 65 accounted for 58% of hospitalisations due to falls and a staggering 95% of fall-related deaths.

NeuRA's Falls, Balance and Injury Research Centre (FBIRC) combines leading expertise in understanding human balance, fall risk factors and strategies for prevention of falls in older people.

Due to funding limitations, we’re not able to help as many people as we could. But, by increasing our understanding of falls, we hope to create simple interventions that can help more people across Australia, and the rest of the world.

The more we can do, the more we can benefit the community by bringing effective fall prevention strategies to everyone who needs them.

Will you consider making a tax-deductible donation so we can give more older Australians access to fall prevention programs?

To coincide with Dementia Australia's Dementia Action Week 2021 with today being World Alzheimer's Day, AAG are delighted to highlight the work of Dementia Reframed in this 30 minute conversation about living well with dementia.

Members of Dementia Reframed, Nancy Russo and Dr Gaynor Macdonald along with long-time member of AAG, A/Prof Jane Mears draw out their visions for changing attitudes surrounding dementia and enhancing care and support.

Their message for Dementia Action Week: Dementia is a disease NOT a death sentence! There are wonderful strategies available to help all those impacted - we just need to learn about them and use them. We are not afraid of dementia! We know that when we get dementia support ‘right’, we will have changed our world for the better and for us all. Dementia is our challenge to change and our inspiration.

Highlighting the need for more research into falls prevention

The recent release of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Report highlighted that the risk of falls and fractures for older Australians remains too high.

But NeuRA research shows that targeted interventions can reduce fall rates by 20 to 50 per cent in adults over the age of 65 years.

Professor Lord and his team have created evidence-based devices that improve mobility and quality of life for older Australians with balance problems, significantly reducing their rate of falls.
