3 hair mistakes you’re making that’s causing thinning hair in midlife…AND what you can do about it!

1️⃣ Brushing While Wet
❌Hair is at its most fragile and elastic when wet. Using a standard brush stretches the hair shaft until it snaps or pulls out from a weakened follicle.
✅Allow hair to airdry 50% and use a Wet Brush with flexible bristles. Always start detangling from the ends and work your way up to the roots.
2️⃣ Rough Towel Drying
❌Vigorous rubbing with a standard terry cloth towel creates friction that raises the hair cuticle. For thinning hair this results in instant frizz, tangles, and “micro snapping” of delicate midlife strands.
✅Swap the heavy towel for a microfibre hair wrap or an old cotton T-shirt. Instead of rubbing, use a “squeeze & blot” motion to soak up excess moisture without disturbing the cuticle.
3️⃣ Using SLS Shampoos
❌Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) is a harsh detergent that strips the scalp of essential oils. Sebum production drops significantly after 40, and SLS leaves the scalp itchy and the hair feeling like straw.
✅ Switch to sulfate-free shampoos. Look for ingredients like Glycerin or Meadowfoam oil which cleanse the scalp while keeping the hair’s protective lipid layer intact.
