There are several factors that can affect breathing mechanics.

Including -

🖤 A core not firing properly.
🖤 Over bracing Abs.
🖤 Tight or tense pelvic floor.
🖤 Forward head posture.
🖤 Habitual shallow breathing pattern.

Expansive deep breathing is often limited when air doesn't flow in the upper and/or lower back region.

One positive technique in supporting expansive breath is being mindful of air moving into the upper and lower back region as well as your chest, belly and into your pelvic floor area.

To support back expansion, lightly tie a resistance band or a tie across your upper or lower back and mindfully notice the back expanding and moving against the band or tie as you breathe in.

This is generate an awareness to the movement. This may be noticeable for some and may not be noticeable for others.

Be patient with yourself. 🤍

Practice mindful breathing with this technique as often as you can so that over time it leads to a positive habitual breathing pattern. 💫

It is suggested that past beliefs, insecurities or fear can greatly impact motor control and cause strain on the musculoskeletal system (Vlaeyen & Linton, 2000).

This is believed to affect daily function including participating in tasks that involve lifting, carrying or pushing - everyday movement for a mother, friend, daughter or worker.

Clinically it appears that if an individual does not have the coping skills necessary to confront certain emotions or symptoms, they will avoid certain activities (Vlaeyen & Linton, 2000).

Practices such as pain management, mindfulness, modified functional movements and breath work can assist with connecting the mind and body to enable participation.

Focusing our mind on certain thought processes, awareness or mindful behavioral practices will assist the body with a framework that will allow for meaningful engagement in daily activities. 💫✨💫

A systematic review reports that c-sections have dramatically increased over the last three decades (Benton et al., 2019).

It is further identified that the physical and psychological implications can extend years beyond the caesarean delivery and affect the health of each woman.

It is also acknowledged that a c-section procedure combines birth with surgery which elicits diverse emotional reactions, prompting the necessity to consider psychosocial applications.

Occupational Therapy is a unique and important discipline that considers the physical, cognitive, psychosocial, emotional and spiritual well-being of women after a c-section.

In the community, how often is it that we are asking other women about their birthing experience?
A question that goes beyond “was it planned?”…”was there a lot of pain?” …”how long until you got back to the gym?”.. “how long until your scar healed?”

Becoming a mother is more than giving birth. 💛
Having a c-section is more than a procedure. 💛

I would love to open this space to experiences..
✨What was your birthing experience?
✨Were there any emotional shifts that were or weren’t expected?
✨What was your experience with transitioning into motherhood?
