We are devastated to hear of the recent passing of a baby who was born at home during a freebirth in Western Australia. We send our deepest condolences to the family, the doula and the emergency services involved. The death of a baby is always tragic, and we send all our love to the parents of this baby.
When a tragic event such as the death of a baby or mother during childbirth occurs, a natural human response is to seek someone to blame. We encourage women and families who have chosen homebirth to tread carefully and be mindful of reading comments on mainstream media articles on this topic, as they may find the content upsetting. Those who were not directly involved in this tragedy do not know the full circumstances of what occurred.
There is an undeniable and unfounded stigma of homebirth in our society and many of these articles and comments are written by people who are generally uneducated about homebirth. Recent research suggests that there are no statistically significant differences in the proportion of intrapartum stillbirths, early or late neonatal deaths between hospital, birth centre and home births (refer to the Homebirth Research section of our website for full details on the research).
We encourage anyone currently planning a homebirth to discuss any concerns they may have with their midwife.
We would like to take this opportunity to address any concerns that members of the public may have regarding homebirth and we have written a statement which you can find on our website www.homebirthaustralia.org/media
