Thank You, Sydney Kids OT Families

As we wrap up the year at Sydney Kids OT, we just want to say a heartfelt thank you to every family who has trusted us with your child’s journey. 💛

Over the last few weeks, we’ve been receiving the most beautiful and thoughtful thank you cards and we just wanted to say how much they’ve meant to our team. We’ve included a few snippets of your kind words below, because they truly capture why we do what we do:

✨ “You’ve made such a difference in our child’s life.”
✨ “We’ve seen the thought and care you put into each session.”

Wishing you a safe, restful holiday season, and we can’t wait to see you in the new year. ✨

📱 New social media laws & your child: how to support them

With the new laws coming into effect, many children and teens are feeling worried about what this means for how they connect with friends and express themselves online.

Here are some practical ways you can support them:

* Talk about the “why”
Explain that the laws are there to help keep them safe, not to punish them.
* Explore other ways to connect
Brainstorm together how they can stay in touch with friends – group chats, gaming with friends you know, phone calls, or in-person catch-ups.
* Create a safe space for big feelings
Let them know it’s okay to feel upset, angry or left out. Listen first, validate their feelings, and problem-solve together.
* Focus on what they can still do online
Help them see what apps, games or websites they can still use safely, and set these up together.
* Be clear about parental controls
Explain what will change on their devices (e.g. screen time limits, app restrictions) so it doesn’t feel like a “surprise punishment”.
* Help them protect what matters to them
👉 Download important photos, videos or creative projects
👉 Check their contact details (especially birthday) so they can easily regain access once they turn 16 without losing content.
* Check in regularly
Keep revisiting the conversation – their feelings and needs might change over time as the laws roll out.

At Sydney Kids OT, we know change can be especially hard for neurodivergent kids and teens. Gentle preparation, predictable routines and open conversations can make a big difference. 💛

Dec 3rd is International Day of People with a Disability 💙

This year’s theme is “Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress.”

For many families, inclusion starts with everyday conversations at home. Kids are naturally curious – they notice mobility aids, communication devices or differences in how someone moves, speaks or plays. How we respond helps shape their attitudes for life.

A few simple ways to talk with your child today (and every day):

Be open and honest. If your child asks a question, answer in simple, respectful language: “Everyone’s body and brain works differently – and that’s okay.”
Focus on strengths. Talk about what a person enjoys and is good at, not just what they find hard.
Use respectful language. Model person-first or identity-affirming language.
Celebrate inclusion. Notice ramps, quiet spaces or visual supports in your community and point out how they help everyone join in.
At Sydney Kids OT, our therapists are passionate about helping children of all abilities participate, play and belong.

School holidays can be exciting… but they can also come with BIG feelings.
Less routine, more activities, late nights and busy days can make it harder for kids to stay calm and regulated.

In our latest blog, we share some practical, family-friendly strategies to support your child’s emotional regulation at home, including:
✨ How to validate and name your child’s emotions
🧰 Ideas for creating an “emotional regulation toolbox”
🧸 Simple sensory breaks and calm spaces you can set up at home

Holidays are a beautiful opportunity to slow down, connect, and discover what truly helps your child feel safe, calm and in control of their feelings.

Keep to a Routine — Even in the Holidays!

As we approach the end of the year, days can start to feel less structured — school winds down, activities pause, and family plans fill the calendar. But keeping a simple routine can help children feel calm and secure, even during the excitement of the holidays.

Children thrive when life is predictable. Having clear expectations and familiar rhythms helps them feel safe and confident — even when everything else changes. Start small: perhaps begin with just three tasks your child can manage, then gradually increase as their independence grows.

Simple ways to support routines this season:
• Get organised the night before
• Review the day ahead together
• Allow plenty of time in the mornings
• Use a visual checklist
• Be realistic about how many tasks your child can complete independently
• Include sensory play — jumping on the trampoline or big squishes under a ball or cushions!
• Celebrate efforts and use positive reinforcement

Small, consistent routines can make a big difference, helping children (and parents!) enjoy a smoother, happier holiday season.

Is Your Child’s Pencil Grip Functional? ✏️

Swipe through ➡️ to see examples of functional and inefficient pencil grasps.
You’ll spot the common grips that make writing comfortable and controlled — and others that can make it awkward or tiring.

Every child’s grasp develops at their own pace, and what matters most isn’t how it looks, but whether it’s functional. A functional grasp means your child can write smoothly, comfortably, and without fatigue.

If you notice your child’s hand tiring quickly, their thumb tucking or wrapping, or their fingers curling tightly around the pencil, an OT can help strengthen fine motor skills and build confident, effective hand movements.

🌈 Invisible Disabilities Week

Not all disabilities can be seen — and that’s an important lesson to share with our children. 💛

This week, we’re raising awareness for invisible disabilities and celebrating our amazing neurodiverse community. From ADHD and autism to sensory processing and learning differences, every child experiences the world in their own unique way.

✨ Be kind. Be patient. Be curious.
You never know what challenges someone might be managing on the inside.

Let’s keep teaching our children that empathy matters — because not every disability is visible. Together, we can build a world that is more inclusive and welcoming for all.

✨ October is ADHD Awareness Month ✨

This month, we’re celebrating the incredible strengths, creativity and resilience of children with ADHD - and shining a light on the support that helps them thrive.

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, energy levels and regulation, but with understanding, structure and the right strategies, children can build confidence and independence in every areas of life.

At Sydney Kids OT, our therapists use evidence-based, neuro-affirming approaches to help children develop a variety of skills including self-regulation, executive function and sensory processing skills — and to support families and teachers, too.

Learn more about how occupational therapy can support children with ADHD in our latest blog post.

🌏💛 World Gratitude Day 💛🌏

“The greatest gift a parent can give a child is a heart full of gratitude.”

With school holidays just around the corner, today is the perfect reminder to pause, step out of the hustle and bustle, and make space for gratitude. These little breaks in routine give us the chance to slow down, share special moments, and connect more deeply with our kids.

Ask your child what they’re grateful for, share your own, and notice how even the smallest things - sunshine, laughter, or time together - can fill hearts with joy.

At Sydney Kids OT, we believe gratitude nurtures not only wellbeing but also stronger bonds between parents and children.

What’s one thing you and your child are grateful for today? Share it below—we’d love to hear.
