The popliteus plays a key role in tibial internal rotation and knee stability during gait.
When this muscle is overactive or restricted, it can alter lower-limb biomechanics, increasing tension through the posterior fascial chain.
This altered load can contribute to increased neural tension along the sciatic nerve, which originates from the lumbosacral spine and travels distally through the posterior thigh and knee.
Targeted soft-tissue release of the popliteus may help reduce peripheral neural tension, improve knee mechanics, and decrease stress transmitted to the lumbosacral region—supporting relief of certain presentations of lower back pain.
