Many Australians impacted by wish they had known about the condition before symptoms developed, according to a new report from Breakthrough T1D Australia and Sanofi.

With early detection of T1D now a reality, the report found that 85% of respondents support a national screening program for the autoimmune condition.

On World COPD Day, spare a thought for the more than half a million Australians living with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, a lung condition which can cause life-threatening breathing difficulties.

While is often dismissed as a wheeze or bad cough, it can be a killer disease, landing one Australian in hospital every 10 minutes and claiming more than 7,600 Australian lives each year.

‘Short of Breath, Think COPD’ – this is the theme for this year’s World COPD Day, emphasising that even though COPD is the fourth leading cause of death worldwide, it is often not diagnosed correctly.

COPD is a serious issue in Australia, as a new report on the burden of this lung disease reveals. Published by Evohealth with support from Sanofi, the report highlights timely and correct diagnosis using spirometry testing as key to ensuring optimal care for COPD patients in Australia.

😣 One Australian is admitted to hospital every 10 minutes.
💔 More than 7,600 Australian lives are claimed each year.
📈 $1.67 billion cost to the Australian healthcare system.

These are some of the key figures unveiled in Australian Parliament House today during the launch of a new report on the burden of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease ( ) in Australia.

Many people haven’t heard of COPD, while some will know the condition as emphysema or chronic bronchitis.

Yet COPD is a seriously debilitating lung disease that makes it hard to breathe. Without effective management, it worsens with time, causing chest infections and lung damage.

The ‘Change that can’t wait: Reducing the human and economic burden of COPD in Australia’ report aims to prevent this irreversible damage for the 500,000+ Australians currently living with COPD. Developed by Evohealth with support from Sanofi Australia, the report offers concrete recommendations to reduce the burden of COPD on patients, families, and our healthcare system.

With the lung condition expected to affect more than 840,000 Australians by 2050, now is the time to implement these recommendations and help turn the tide.

Thank you Mark Brooke, CEO of Lung Foundation Australia, Dr Sanjay Ramakrishnan and Renae Beardmore for offering such valuable insights and advocating for the change that can’t wait.
