Australiaโ€™s average maternal age has risen steadily from 28.9y/o in 1998 to 31.3y/o in 2023 (the first-time mums average is around 29.9y/o now). Meanwhile, first time mothers under 20 have halved since 2010, and births to women 40+ are on the rise.

Dear FertilityPsych Clients and Friends,
As you may be aware, our service is delivered by a highly skilled team of psychiatrists, all of who have worked in the public hospital system and some of who continue to do so.
We strongly support the action taken by NSW psychiatrists to resign from their roles in the NSW public system, the primary goal of which is to force the NSW government to fix a broken system.
Please note this action does not directly impact FertilityPsych appointments, but we respect and wish to assist our colleagues with bringing attention to the plight of public psychiatry in NSW. We would greatly appreciate you helping us do this.

The IVF process is heavily focused on the mother-to-be and typically involves Consultation, Testing, Ovarian Stimulation, Egg Retrieval, Fertilization and Embryo Transfer.
At FertilityPsych, we play a small but vital part which involves the logistics of accessing superannuation funds to finance the IVF process, providing the mother meets the criteria laid out by the ATO.
Now our attention turns to the male and their role, small or large, in providing the s***m to fertilise the egg after retrieval. This post describes some of the situations where a procedure is required to retrieve the s***m required.
The most common situations we encounter are as follows:
TESA (Testicular S***m Aspiration)
A fine needle is inserted into the testicle to aspirate (withdraw) fluid.
TESE (Testicular S***m Extraction)
A small incision is made in the testicle to retrieve a tissue sample
Whilst needing to have a TESA or TESE procedure is not ideal, the good news is these are not unusual situations and happily the procedure above can also be funded using superannuation. When you attend your appointment with us, please make sure that you mention it during the consultation with our doctors so we can be sure to include this in our reports and CRS documentation.

We found this article very interesting. It describes the increasing number of women who are starting their family before they have met a partner.

Amy was single and worried her chance of motherhood was slipping away. So she decided to go it alone.

We have been reviewing the recent changes to the Fertility Treatment Rebate Program and felt they are worth a post. The program is administered by Service NSW and NSW Health and is part of the NSW Affordable IVF Initiative.
Effectively, the new Fertility Treatment Rebate - 2 Program commences on 11 March 2025, however, the ability to access the $2000 will now be means tested. To be eligible, the annual household income must be $116,000 or less. Additionally, the treatment needs to be scheduled on or after 19 February 2025.
There is a lot to unpick with this news, however, the first point to focus on is that if you want to apply under the existing program, applications must be submitted by 4 March 2025.

We have been reviewing the recent changes to the Fertility Treatment Rebate Program and felt it is worth a post. The Program is administered by Service NSW and

Telehealth allows you to engage with FertilityPsych by phone or a video call. It was expanded in March 2020 to support patients and healthcare providers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
If you live regionally and access our Telehealth services, you are entitled to one free session with a psychiatrist, every 12 months. At the time of writing this article, this means a saving of $700!
Qualifying for the Regional Telehealth Rebate is dependent on your Suburb and Postcode. The steps are quite simple:
- Access the Modified Monash Model. This document lists all Suburb and Postcode and provides a Classification.
- Search for your combination Suburb and Postcode.
- If the MMM Classification is not 1 then you are a Regional patient and you qualify for the rebate
