Water safety this summer 🌊🛶🚣♀️⛵🤽🏿♂️🏊🚣🛶💦
As young children become more mobile, the risk of drowning increases. Toddlers are curious and increasingly mobile but lack an understanding of water-related hazards, making them vulnerable. There are things you can do:
🔹Keeping children safe around water starts with your full and active supervision, no matter how confident they are in the water.
🔹Use appropriate barriers to prevent unsupervised access to water
🔹Use Pool gates appropriately
🔹Do not leave water containers left unattended or unemptied
🔹Always stay close enough to reach them quickly, whether you’re at the beach, the pool, near rivers and lakes, or even at home around baths and spas.
🔹Make sure an adult, not an older child, is in charge of watching. Teaching your child basic water safety rules and enrolling them in swimming lessons when they’re ready – usually around 4–5 years old – can help them learn important skills and enjoy water more safely (Australian Water Safety Strategy 2030)
