Effective, positive coping action, can mitigate a sense of helplessness and loss of self efficacy after a traumatic event.
So after the horror of the mass shooting at Bondi last Sunday, we seek to find ways to cope with the traumatic material that we have seen via media outlets, from our friends who were there, or, from our first responders who were there.
This may not seem like a time to be grateful!
But in this way I am - I am so so glad I learned EMDR all those years ago and that I can offer it to our community now.
Because EMDR provides a safe, effective therapy that actually reduces the impact after trauma.
Debriefing doesn’t help and may make it worse.
Going over the material in your mind or watching repeats endlessly doesnt help.
EMDR assists your brain to naturally process the fragments of sensory information activating the ‘here and now’ awareness that it is over now, and naturally allows your mind and body to find and use resources to calm your nervous system (so you can eat and sleep again).
As Dr Seuss wrote “ it is fun to have fun but you have to know how”
So it is with healing.
‘ we are built to heal, but we have to know how’
Do - Seek an EMDR therapist for healing after this event- we are trained in trauma and we know how healing works.
You can - look up the Trauma Recovery Network Australia www.traumarecovery.org or www.emdraa.org.au to find a qualified trained therapist.
Volunteer EMDR therapists have made themselves available for the live online session tomorrow.
The event on Saturday will likely be repeated so if you can’t make it tomorrow, don’t worry. We will keep you updated for future community group sessions as we get them organized.
