Why did I want to start my own disability support business?

As a person with a disability, and as a parent of an NDIS user, I knew there was plenty of space in the market to build my own little community!

One focused on making disabled voices at the centre, building solid relationships between workers, participants, and their families, and would allow support workers' choice and control in their work as well!

Running my own business as a sole trader has always suited my lifestyle so much more than working for someone else!

I've never been a traditional model employee type! No, not because of the tattoos, piercings, and hair colours only 🤷‍♀️🤣.

I have always felt like I would have more to offer if I could work the hours I needed and with the clients I chose, rather than forever being the round peg trying to jam into that square hole.

I started with a little 12 hours a week on the side and grew to a full time self employed life in the NDIS space.

Maybe it's time to take the same bet on yourself.

How Do I Pay My Tax And Other Questions Answered!🤔🙌

A lot of you have hit up my DMs with questions about what is included in the NDIS Sole Traders workshop, so I thought it best to answer right here so everyone can share in the info!

Will you explain how to pay tax as a sole trader? I’m nervous about that the most!

Yes, I will address tax and offer some solutions for managing your tax and invoicing as a sole trader. However, it is important to note that each individuals circumstances are different, and I am NOT offering advice for each personal situation. Just generalised information.

Will you show us how to get clients? I am worried I won’t get enough work.

In the course and workbook, I offer advice on how to gain support work as a contractor through several different channels, including networking, social media, agencies, etc.

Is this course good for health practitioners?

This course is specifically designed for people wishing to be sole trader support workers in direct supports. Some of the information may be transferable but will not be specifically related to health practitioners.

I can’t attend on the live zoom, is there another day I can watch?

If you can’t attend the live zoom, never fear! It will be recorded and sent to you via email to watch and rematch to your hearts content.

There are some things that can’t be taught…

There are so many reasons why someone might choose the path of becoming a disability support worker.

Some may be drawn to the field because they enjoy helping others and making a positive impact on people's lives.

For others, becoming a disability support worker offers an opportunity to work in a caring, compassionate environment that allows them to use their skills and experience to make a meaningful difference.

Some people may have personal experience with a disability which guided their life towards this role.

That last one was me. I was determined to become a hairdresser when I was a teen, then once I became disillusion with that I did a teaching degree. It wasn't until my son Rohan was diagnosed with Autism as a toddler my whole life shifted gear. I knew we had early intervention covered, and school years were mapped out….but I became obsessed with creating opportunities post school for him! I was determined he would be afforded the same opportunities as his siblings. It's funny how one moment in time can change your entire trajectory.

Lived experience should count for so much more than a piece of paper - theres just some things you can't learn in a book.

I encourage all parents, carers, and people with a disability to take up their collective wisdom and provide much needed support in our community.

Starting a new sole trader support worker business can be a bit of a scary thought, particularly if you are used to working in a structured workplace or under the direction of a manager. The thought of being responsible for all the ins and outs of your business can be a bit overwhelming, but don't let fear hold you back from following your big dreams!

If you are considering starting your own business as a sole trader in the NDIS Space, here are a few tips to help you overcome your fears and take the first step:

Identify your passion

Knowing exactly what you're passionate about can be a helpful tool in overcoming fear when starting your new business. Knowing what you love to do and what you feel most comfortable with will help you build confidence in your abilities as an independent support worker. Those niche skills and interests you have will set you apart from the competition and steer you towards your ideal clients!

Believe in yourself

It is so important to know that you have the knowledge, skills, and experience to make your sole trader business successful!

Build a strong support network

While you may be starting your own business, it’s important to surround yourself with a strong support system. Join support groups for small businesses or consider enlisting the help of a mentor. This will give you a chance to have a level of reflection and provide you with a sounding board to bounce ideas off.

I couldn't fit into the workforce, so I created my own!

I am a busy mum of four children, one of which has a significant disability.

Despite my education and experience, I never seemed to be able to thrive in a position at work where I was chained to a 9-5 and a long commute. I used every sick day, every holiday day on the kids…..then I began to struggle with my own chronic illness and pain.

Something had to give…….

I turned my 16 years of community services experience AND my 19 years of personal experience with disability into a drive to becoming a successful sole trader in the NDIS sector.

Now, I have helped more than 50 others do the same!

There is room for SO many more passionate and empathetic people in the NDIS space.
