Wow — this is the kind of lived experience more people need to hear! Stories like this should be front-page news and celebrated by all health professionals who believe in fostering genuine health, not just managing disease. There is another way forward — through changing the way we eat, we can better manage chronic conditions and live fuller, freer lives, focusing on what truly matters and brings real satisfaction. Well done to Will and his family
All three of my kids used to take medication for ADHD. Two of them had such bad constipation problems that they had to be X-rayed and would wet their pants. One was in therapy for impulsive behavior and struggled with peers, school and team sports. Nobody slept well, I gave them all melatonin every night.
Every year I took them in for well visits, and every year the doctor would make sure I was giving them milk, and would recommend mirilax and stimulants. Nobody ever asked about their diet, or about how they felt…like mindwise. They just wanted to know if they wore helmets on their bikes and sunscreen when they sat inside by a window. Nobody ever tested their blood sugar either.
I thought I was doing well with food. Whole Wheat breads, a lot of fruits, organic gummy snacks and granola bars. In my mind, cheddar bunnies were better than goldfish! Dinners were things they would eat! Like tator tots, pastas, fish sticks and of course veggies…but usually those were a struggle. I followed the food pyramid, which told me less red meats and more grains was the answer.
I figured that this was just life. A loud house, medicated kids (almost everyone I knew had ADHD meds in their homes), kids who liked to stay up late, peer issues were part of growing up, right?
Then. It all changed.
COVID came, homeschool came and T1 hit.
I chose to NOT ACCEPT the T1 life I saw other parents and kids living who were following the ADA dietary guidelines. Covering foods that spike blood sugar with math equations just wasn’t working right. Low blood sugars could cause death now. High blood sugars could cause horrific complications and years off his life later.
So we used logic and changed the food. And that change, changed EVERYTHING.
Blood sugars became stable. Constipation went away. Sleep became easy. And all ADHD medication needs vanished.
Some may say I’m not feeding my kids healthy foods. They need grains and sugar to grow.
No, they don’t.
Some may say I’m depriving my child of cupcakes, snow cones and ice cream.
No, I’m not.
Some may say my kids will grow up and rebel. Then I’ll be sorry I chose this lifestyle.
No, I won’t.
My kids are thriving. All THREE of them. They are straight A students, athletes and have tons of friends. They are kind and compassionate. Nobody is deprived, sad or resentful. Instead…they are grateful.
It doesn’t matter how many bozos there are who want to tell me that how I feed my family is wrong. I simply say to them….WATCH how I WIN. 💪🏻
