Challenging behaviour in children can stem from frustration, unmet needs, or difficulty expressing emotions.

It may include aggression, defiance, or frequent outbursts that disrupt daily life.

Understanding the root causes and providing support can help children develop healthier ways to communicate and cope.

With patience and guidance, they can learn to manage their emotions and behaviours more effectively.

We provide strategies to address challenging behaviours, helping families develop healthier coping mechanisms and improve their interactions with others.

Negative self-talk and anxiety can often be caused by cognitive distortions, such as catastrophising, labeling and personalising.

Example of catastrophising: "If my partner leaves me, I will never find anyone else, and will be alone forever".

Example of labelling: "Since I made a mistake, I am a horrible person".

Example of personalising: "My guest said he was still hungry, I must be an awful cook and a failure".

Recognising this negative self-talk and cognitive distortions can allow us to challenge the thought and propose an alternative, more helpful thought.

Our compassionate and qualified team are committed to helping children, adolescents and adults navigate challenges, cultivate wellbeing and achieve meaningful change.

Today's post focuses on six mindful activities. Mindfulness is beneficial for a number of different reasons:
-> Mindfulness leads to less avoidance of stress, and more approach coping (Donald et al., 2016)

-> Helps alleviate stress by improving emotional regulation, allowing for an improved mood and heightened ability to handle stress (Remmers et al., 2016)

-> Enhanced ability to deal with illness (Zernicke et al., 2016)

-> Facilitation of recovery, for example decreasing anxiety and facilitating post-traumatic growth (Boyle et al., 2017) and (Tamagawa et al., 2015)

-> Decreased depressive symptoms, anxiety, stress and increased self-compassion (Falsafi, 2016)

Our compassionate and qualified team are committed to helping children, adolescents and adults navigate challenges, cultivate wellbeing and achieve meaningful change.

🧠Research by Ford et al (2018) and Baikie et al (2005) suggest that journaling helps us accept rather than judge our mental experiences, and also helps people better understand their needs and boosts wellbeing (Tartakovsky, 2022)

📆As we near the end of June, it can be especially helpful to journal to reflect on the past six months and work out a plan for the remainder of the year.

📖A bonus journal prompt: is there anything in my life I am needing extra support with?

🧠 Mental Health Tip: The Power of Positive Self-Talk

The way we speak to ourselves matters. Research shows that positive self-talk can:

✔️ Reduce stress
✔️ Improve emotional regulation
✔️ Enhance coping strategies
✔️ Support overall psychological well-being

🗣️ Clinical Insight:
Positive self-talk isn’t about ignoring challenges—it’s about approaching them with compassion and balanced thinking. Try shifting from “I can’t handle this” to “I’m doing the best I can with what I have.”

✨ Therapeutic change begins with the words we tell ourselves.

Our compassionate and qualified team are committed to helping children, adolescents and adults navigate challenges, cultivate wellbeing and achieve meaningful change.

Dr Adele Stavropoulos has over a decade’s experience.
