Interesting study from Princess Alexandra from Prof Holtmann’s team. Published in the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, the study showed that gastric and oesophageal cancer rates were 2.7 and 7.5 times higher among individuals with a positive immunochemical faecal occult blood test (iFOBT) undergoing bowel cancer screening than rates for the general population.

Should we as gastroenterologists be recommending upper GI endoscopies routinely in patients with +iFOBT?

At this stage not recommended or Medicare reimbursed, but perhaps this will need to be reconsidered?

Make sure you eat well with plenty of fibre to keep your poo happy. It might just prevent a heart attack!

It affects more than 20 per cent of the population, but few of us would think that constipation increases the risk of a heart attack or stroke.

This is consistent with the advice we give our patients - we need to focus on simple changes that can be accomplished easily. Dietary fibre is the best "prebiotic" and we grossly underestimate how to achieve 30g daily consumption!

Try to make a few simple changes this year - more grains, nuts, fresh fruit and vegetables (in season), and avoid processed foods. Not a difficult concept, but perhaps more difficult to sustain in our busy lives!

Telehealth has been one of the highly significant and progressive changes during and following on from Covid.

At Sydney Gastroenterology and Liver Group, will continue to provide Telehealth follow up consultations, but along with Govenrment and Medicare recommendations will only provide Initial Video Consultations in special circumstances.

Telehealth items would be scrapped so initial specialist consultations only attract Medicare funding when provided face-to-face under the latest MBS revamp being considered by the federal government. But funding would also be made available for subsequent consultations conducted via telehealth regar...

Like any guideline, it is advised all endoscopists and anaesthetists take into account patient factors and individualise our approach.

The American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) has come out in opposition to advice from anaesthetists over the routine cessation of glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) prior to endoscopy. While recognising that GLP-1 RAs may increase the risk of gastroparesis, the AGA....

Another round of name changes - not for anything new regarding the disease but to address “stigma” associated with “fatty” liver and “alcoholic” liver disease. Any thoughts?

The condition formerly known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) then metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) has had yet another rebrand. Hepatologists’ proposed changes incorporate non-stigmatising language, more accurate descriptors of the spectrum of overlapping d...

Interesting to read about the potential protective effect of H.pylori in children.

A child with H. pylori should not trigger an automatic eradication treatment prescription, instead the infection can be left alone in most cases and potentially has a protective role, says a paediatric gastroenterologist. Writing in Therapeutic Advances in Gastroenterology [link here], WA-based Dr M...

We couldn’t agree more with the findings of this study.

Multidisciplinary management is key - but undergoing appropriate baseline investigations like Fibroscan are critical - this helps both give the most accurate information and motivates patients at the higher end of the risk spectrum.

At Sydney Gastroenterology and Liver, we offer dedicated hepatologist management, dietitians and Fibroscan equipment.

A dedicated fatty liver clinic set up by gastroenterologists in Melbourne has provided important lessons for a multidisciplinary model of care to achieve better outcomes for patients with NAFLD, its developers say. The clinic, established in 2017 by Professor Stuart Roberts and colleagues at the Alf...

We embrace AI technology to assist our team with continued improvement in detecting colorectal adenomas (polyps that have a malignant potential). All of our endoscopes at the Sydney Adventist Hospital are equipped with this wonderful technology!

Patients are already looking for computer-aided detection (CADe) when shopping around for colonoscopy services, according to one of the co-authors on an international position statement about artificial intelligence (AI) in colonoscopy. The insight, from Brisbane gastroenterologist Associate Profess...

A great step forward for patients suffering from recurrent Clostridium difficile colitis.

FMT or Faecal Microbiota Transplantation has been demonstrated to be the most successful treatment for this disease.

Human stool bank BiomeBank has received the green light to distribute FMT products for the treatment of C. difficile in what the company is claiming is a ‘world first’ by regulators. The donor-derived product approved by the TGA last week will first be launched as a frozen syringe formulation fo...
