PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) has been renamed PMOS Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome to more accurately reflect the complexity of this condition and how it impacts health in women in multiple ways.

Experts say the updated name aims to improve diagnosis, reduce stigma and better reflect the condition's full impact on the body.

Happy International Day of the Midwife!

Midwives have always been needed to help guide women safely through pregnancy, childbirth and new parenthood, even before modern medicine as we know it. They have always been advocates for women’s and newborn health. We, as Obstetricians, would not be able to do our job properly without collaborating with our midwifery colleagues, and we are hugely appreciative of all that they do.

Here in metropolitan Australia, we recognise that we are incredibly fortunate to have so many skilled midwives. That is not the case for the majority of the world, including even rural Australia. Too many women still die from preventable causes during pregnancy and childbirth. Skilled care before, during, and after birth can save lives — and midwives are best placed to provide it. Achieving universal coverage of midwife-delivered interventions by 2035 could avert 67% of these deaths. But, the world is short one million midwives. Please support the call to grow, support, and sustain the global midwifery workforce.
