Today is World Parkinson's Day.

More than 65,000 people in NSW are estimated to be living with Parkinson's Disease - a (currently) uncurable neurodegenerative condition impacting all aspects of a person's life.

Parkinson's NSW is an organisation dedicated to ensuring people with Parkinson's have access to the support they need to live life well with the condition by providing access to specialist nurses, a wide range of information and resources, and a network of more than 70 support groups across the state. It is funded almost exclusively through donations from the public.

Please consider donating to this very worthy organisation by contributing to the Eastern Suburbs Young Onset Support Group's City2Surf campaign: https://city2surf25.grassrootz.com/parkinson-s-nsw/movers-and-shakers

Seems the news cycle can’t get enough of “our Emma”, and rightly so.
Please click & share away to raise awareness for Parkinson’s Disease.

At first glance you wouldn't know Emma Tinkler is living with two incurable diseases that require constant monitoring and medication.

Hello All, Just putting this link here. Its a podcast recommendation from 1 of our members. I have a feeling that its been recommended to the group once before, if it has then this post can act as a reminder. Reportedly (I haven't listened yet) is a highly intelligent & humorous discussion on Parkinson's. All 6 of the podcasters have Parkinson's, at least 3 of them are journalists, 1 is a prominent judge, and 1 of the journalists I believe is or was also a script writer for The Vicar of Dibley! Its further recommended that if you're interested in listening, start with listening to the 1st episode (at least) from earlier this year, as getting to know who all the podcasters are, from the time they are diagnosed, is so important for future eps. Enjoy!

Every day, 38 Australians are diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. This World Parkinson’s Day, we want to raise awareness about the effects of Parkinson’s on people diagnosed before the age of 50 - referred to as people with young onset PD (YOPD). People with YOPD are more likely to experience dystonia - that is they experience prolonged muscle contractions that lead to abnormal postures - and dyskinesias - involuntary movements resulting from long-term use of the drugs used to treat PD. People living with YOPD are in the prime of their lives, raising children, nurturing relationships, developing their careers, and building the financial nest eggs necessary to keep them secure as their condition progresses.
Parkinson’s Australia through its state organisations, supports people living with Parkinson’s in navigating the journey that it entails. This is especially important for those whose diagnosis will impact their lives across a variety of life stages - over the course of decades.

If you would like to directly help those affected by Parkinson’s in their day-to-day lives, consider a donation to Parkinson’s Australia

If you would like to support research directed at learning more about Parkinson’s and how it might be slowed, stopped or cured, consider a donation to Shake It Up Australia Shake it Up partners with The Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research to ensure collaboration across borders within the Parkinson’s community and cutting edge research that allows people living with PD, their loved ones and all members of the community to contribute to research.
