Being at school means your child is exposed to lots of new and more complex vocabulary linked to the topics they are learning about.

To help your child to learn and remember new words, you can help them by:

✨ Thinking about the beginning sound

✨ Clapping the syllables in the word

✨ Thinking of a word it rhymes with

✨ Drawing/finding pictures of the word

✨ Practicing using the word in a sentence

👻🎃Let’s talk about the super power of books... 🎃👻

Here are some recommended books for children of all ages, that you can try this with over this season.

Books are a great way to help boost a child’s vocabulary and language skills.

You can:

🎃 Point out different pictures or words in the book

🎃 Comment about what is happening (not just read the words)

🎃 Makes comments about what you can see

🎃 Ask simple questions about the story

For older children, you can also:

🎃 Ask them to make a guess about what will happen next

🎃 Encourage them to share their ideas about the story

🎃 Talk about the story and link it to meaningful real-life experiences

🎃 Ask the child what they thought about the story.


Research has indicated that interactive shared book reading can help children by:

🎃 Supporting a wide range of early language skills

🎃 Help children to learn language faster

🎃 Giving them a wider vocabulary

Let’s talk about how language difficulties may show up in the classroom or at home...

For some children, expressing their thoughts and feelings using words can be really challenging. This can lead to frustration, anger or other behaviours as compensatory ways to help them express themselves.

It is so important to remember that

❗Behaviour is a form of communication❗

Have you considered if those difficulties could be related to language?

If you have concerns with the language development of your child or a child you work with, consider speaking to your local Speech Pathologist for advice and information.
