NSW Health is warning the community of the risks of illicit drug use after detecting two substances of concern recently.

- The first warning concerns multiple M**A (ecstasy) tablets and capsules containing a higher dose than usually circulates in tested community samples.

- Ketamine-like substances, or analogues, have also been detected in white powder and crystalline matter.

Both substances were detected by the NSW Government’s drug checking trial at last weekend’s Strawberry Fields event in Tocumwal, in Southern NSW.

No festival attendees experienced an overdose requiring hospitalisation, and one drug warning was issued to patrons on Friday night for the M**A tablets.

NSW Health is concerned the substances are still in circulation and drug checking, through the NSW Government’s drug checking trial, will be available at the Hypersonic music event taking place at Sydney Showground in western Sydney this Saturday.

NSW Health Chief Addiction Medicine Specialist, Dr Hester Wilson said it was also concerning it will be hot this weekend, with temperatures expected to be in the 30’s.

“High doses of M**A can cause severe agitation, raised body temperature, seizures or fits, irregular heart rhythm and death,” Dr Wilson said.

“These risks are greatly increased if M**A is used with other stimulants, such as amphetamines or co***ne, or if high amounts are consumed over a short period.

“The amount of M**A in a tablet or capsule can vary significantly, even within the same batch.”

“Hot environments, such as at music festivals, increase the risk of harm from M**A. Taking a break from dancing, seeking shade and drinking water are important measures to reduce the risk of overheating.”

There have also been detections of ketamine analogues in white powders and crystalline substance expected to contain ketamine or amphetamine. Ketamine analogues copy ketamine’s chemical makeup but can produce different effects, including stronger dissociation or hallucinations.

Ketamine-like substances, or analogues, can cause seizures and irregular heart rhythm. There is potential for greater harm if the ketamine analogue is taken in combination with depressant drugs, such as alcohol, GHB, benzodiazepines, or opioids, or with stimulants (such as methamphetamine, co***ne or M**A).

“If you or a friend has taken drugs and feel unwell, you won't get into trouble for seeking medical care. Please seek help immediately by calling Triple Zero (000),” said Dr Wilson.

At music festivals there are experienced onsite medical providers and teams of well-trained peer volunteers from programs such as DanceWize NSW who are ready to support you at many major festivals. Other event staff are also trained to help patrons.

NSW Health is urging the community to do everything they can to protect themselves from COVID-19 as cases rise across the state.

The latest NSW Respiratory Surveillance Report shows 3,475 people in NSW testing positive for COVID-19 in the week ending 14 June, an increase of more than 10 per cent compared with the previous week.

The upswing in COVID-19 has come at the same time as influenza is on the rise and at moderate levels in NSW.
Most people with COVID-19 do not test for the virus, so the latest figures represent a small proportion of all people who have the virus.

“While most people have already received their primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations, we’re urging people, especially those aged 65 and over, to get a booster to protect themselves,” Health Protection NSW Executive Director Dr Jeremy McAnulty said.

“COVID-19 is a serious illness and can cause hospitalisation and death, especially in people who are older, have other risk factors, or are immunocompromised. Importantly if you do fall ill, you can always call healthdirect on 1800 022 222 for free, instant health advice and for access to antivirals if you are eligible.”

NSW Health also continues to remind the community there are a few simple steps they can take to protect themselves and others from respiratory illness, including:
- staying up to date with their vaccinations
- staying home if they’re sick and wearing a mask if they need to go out
- avoiding crowded spaces and getting together in well-ventilated spaces
- considering doing a rapid antigen test before visiting those more vulnerable
- making a plan with their doctor if they’re at higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19 or influenza about what to do if they get sick, including what test to take, and discussing if they are eligible for antiviral medicine
- practicing good general hygiene, like regular handwashing.

NSW Health is warning the community about the dangers of nitazenes following the detection of nitazenes in fake oxycodone tablets in NSW.

The fake oxycodone tablets were found to contain N-desethyl isotonitazene, and have been described as green round tablets, marked ‘OC’ on the front and ‘80’ on the reverse, and lack a film coating.

Pharmacy-dispensed oxycodone, sold as the brand name Oxycontin, is now marked ‘ON’ instead of ‘OC’ and has a film coating.

Nitazenes are extremely potent synthetic opioids which are more likely to suppress or stop breathing compared with other opioids.

NSW Poisons Information Centre Medical Director Dr Darren Roberts said these drugs are extremely dangerous, as they can be hundreds of times more potent than oxycodone and can cause severe overdose or death.

“Nitazenes are extremely potent and can vary widely in their strength," Dr Darren Roberts said.

“As they are illicit and unregulated, there is no way of knowing what type of nitazene is present or what dosage is being taken. The strength and contents can vary widely, even within the same batch.

“It is extremely important that people recognise the signs of an opioid overdose, signs to look for include pin-point pupils, drowsiness, loss of consciousness, slowed breathing/snoring, and skin turning blue/grey.

“It's strongly recommended that anyone who uses illicit drugs carry naloxone," Dr Roberts said.

Nitazenes have been detected in fake tablets, such as oxycodone and benzodiazepines, and in drugs thought to be he**in or M**A.

Take home naloxone is a life-saving treatment which can temporarily reverse an opioid overdose, including with nitazenes.

Nitazenes can last longer in the body than oxycodone, he**in and naloxone. Higher and repeated doses of naloxone may be required as well as hospital treatment.

Anyone who uses naloxone should call Triple Zero (000) for an Ambulance immediately after use for follow up care. You won't get into trouble for seeking medical care. If you feel unwell, or if your friend feels unwell, do something about it.

Take home naloxone is available as an easy-to-use nasal spray or injection from some pharmacies and other health services. For more information on the take-home naloxone program visit: https://yourroom.health.nsw.gov.au/getting-help/Pages/Naloxone.aspx

Naloxone is available from NUAA via mail in a discreet package.

Order via their online shop (https://shop.nuaa.org.au/) or call (02) 9171 6650.

Anyone who has concerns about adverse effects from drugs should contact the NSW Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26, at any time 24/7.

For support and information on drug and alcohol problems, contact the Alcohol and Drug Information Service on 1800 250 015. This is a 24/7 service offering confidential and anonymous telephone counselling and information.
