Barriers to Meniere’s Disease Research - ARO 2025

Significant differences exist in the way global medical research institutions investigate and publish Meniere’s Disease research papers - yet clinicians are expected to deal with patients day-to-day.

The differences in diagnosis criteria, lack of consensus on subtypes and inability to standardise biomarkers and imaging to detect differences - varying stages of endolymphatic hydrops and differences between vestibular migraine (and or endolymphatic hydrops and variants, both of which can be present any one individual) is a management issue rather than a scientific one.

Standardised biomarkers, many Initially developed by Professor Lindsey Wing, ENT course director at Sydney University in the late 1970s and more lately, new technologies such as whole genome sequencing are becoming translational - more individually patient focused and targetted therapy, peeling back the layers with personalised and precision medicine.
