What happens to ni**le piercings during breast surgery?

If you currently have ni**le piercings and are considering breast surgery, the jewellery will usually need to be removed before your procedure. This is required to maintain a sterile operating environment during surgery.

In addition, surgical cautery (diathermy) is used during procedures to control bleeding. If metallic jewellery is left in place, heat from the cautery can concentrate around the metal and may increase the risk of a burn injury to the ni**le. For this reason, metal piercings cannot remain in place during surgery.

In some cases, to help prevent the piercing channel from closing, patients may be provided with silicone studs to wear before surgery. These are soaked in antiseptic solution at home and can remain in place until the procedure.

However, if the surgery involves the ni**le itself, such as ni**le reduction or procedures where the ni**le-areola complex is repositioned, all piercings must be removed and there is a possibility that the piercing channel may close during healing.

Every surgical plan and recovery timeline is different, which is why these details are discussed prior to surgery.

This is something Dr Johnny Kwei will discuss with you during your consultation.

Before and After: Abdominoplasty 5 months results.

This young mother of two, who struggled with lower lumbar back pain, and cough and exercise urinary incontinence, had lost 15kg and was diagnosed with a >35mm re**us divarication on ultrasound.

She underwent an abdominoplasty with re**us divarication repair.

Surgery: Abdominoplasty + re**us divarication repair
Hospital admission: 4 nights
Tissue/skin removed: 2.2kg
Time off driving: 1-2 weeks
Back to gentle exercise: Week 3
Back to normal exercise: Week 6-8

Post-surgery, the patient experienced minimal discomfort and had felt better core strength even when walking at one week. She reported significant improvements in both lower back pain and urinary incontinence. At five months, she feels stronger at the gym than pre-surgery, with the resolution of both her lower back pain and cough and exercise incontinence. She is extremely happy with her results.
