Things I know having worked with families for nearly a decade:

🟣 Each family is unique, yet all families are human (flawed), complex and multifaceted

🟒 Therapeutic work with parents is vital, especially as trauma often runs within families

🟣 We need to collaboratively find solutions, as everyone in the family is an expert in their family

🟒 There are fluid roles, systems & structures in every family that are unspoken and unseen, yet informs how everyone acts, behaves, communicates and connects

🟣 When we help build self-awareness, empathy & connection within a family, this creates stronger bonds

🟒 We need to recognise each other's strengths, as this builds resilience within the family system.

Support coordinators, this is for you!
- Look at providers who have extensive experience within the NDIS
- Consider looking at providers who have had different roles in the NDIS and have wide experiences.
Keep these two points handy

Try try and keep trying different therapies. Aside from Cinematherapy (our favourite πŸ˜‰), there are a bunch of other options that are sure to help autistic women. Experiment!

Autistic women, you are powerful. Our arms are always welcome and we hope, in some way, this letter made you feel empowered because you deserve to feel that wayπŸ’œ

Cinematherapy has a place for everyone, truly. With one client of mine, it also helps that we bonded over our love of horror films πŸ˜„
Movies are so so powerful!

Here's a review from my 22 year old client on the Autism spectrum.

'She's The Man' is one example of a romcom that can be used in cinematherapy about self- awareness, acceptance & vulnerability πŸ§β€β™€οΈ

Your value does not stem from your looks. Your sense of self, who you are, what is inside you, what you hold inside your heart and how you treat others is what is most valuable.
Love, accept, nurture and embrace yourself. Don't be so hard on yourself! πŸ’œ

Cinematherapy + young adults with an enthusiastic passion for movies = the perfect match🀌

Movies bring joy, movies can be mirrors characters can be role models. All of these (and moreπŸ˜‰) are the components of cinema-therapy. Embrace it and try it for yourself!

We gotta start somewhere, so let's start here. Cinematherapy. That is right, cinematherapy. Let's break it downπŸ’ƒ
