This week, we are supporting Birth Trauma Awareness Week, July 14-18, 2025. Birth Trauma Awareness Week is an important time for us all to reflect on the physical and emotional trauma that birth can cause and to come together to advocate for increased awareness and the need for timely, evidence-based care for those who need it.

Associate Professor Nicole Reilly, researcher from our Burwood Hospital shines a light on birth trauma. Around a third of women report that their experience of giving birth was traumatic. For some women, this can lead to a range of emotional health challenges, including difficulties bonding with their baby or childbirth-related PTSD. Congratulations to Nelson for being awarded this month's Caregiver Values Award for Excellence. Prashan was described by his colleagues as follows:
🧡Nelson does an excellent job educating nursing students during their observation of TMS and expertly explains the TMS process and answers questions at the right level for student understanding, resulting in wonderful feedback from all students.

These awards honour caregivers who through their attitude and behaviour, exemplify the values of St John of God Health Care.

Well done Nelson! 👏

On Wednesday we held a lovely NAIDOC Week celebration at Burwood. A number of caregivers and patients joined us where we shared an acknowledgement of country, a reflection on NAIDOC Week, a look at our “Wall of Fame” – significant Aboriginal & Torres Strait Island people and their stories, and finally delved deeper into the story of one of these, Adam Goodes.

After a NAIDOC Week reflection, we acknowledged the 2025 theme of NAIDOC Week, “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy”, acknowledged the 50 years of NAIDOC – honouring and elevation Indigenous voices, culture and resilience, and the journey experienced over these 50 years.

The 2025 National NAIDOC Week theme "The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy," celebrates not only the achievements of the past but the bright future ahead, empowered by the strength of our young leaders, the vision of our communities, and the legacy of our ancestors.

NAIDOC Week this year marks a powerful milestone: 50 years of honoring and elevating Indigenous voices, culture, and resilience.

NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth and at our hospitals we have many events planned for our caregivers to learn more.
