😲Did you know that children with Cerebral Palsy should have an annual spine X-Ray to monitor for scoliosis?
😬Have you not done an annual spine X-Ray for your child with Cerebral palsy because you think that they don't need it?

🧒Children with cerebral palsy are at a higher risk of developing scoliosis, with scoliosis occurring at younger ages in individuals classified at a higher GMFCS level. In addition, the incidence of scoliosis continues to increase up to the age of 20–25 years. As such, routine Spine Surveillance is essential for early detection and timely intervention to prevent or manage the progression of spinal curvature. 💪

The Spine surveillance process typically involves the following components:
1. Regular Clinical Assessments: 👩‍⚕️Paediatricians, Orthopaedic specialists, or Physiotherapists, perform regular clinical examinations to evaluate the alignment of the spine, look for signs of asymmetry, and assess muscle tone and strength, which can impact spinal stability.
2. X-rays and Radiological Evaluation: 🩻X-rays are often used to obtain a clearer picture of the spine's alignment and curvature. The frequency of X-rays will depend on the severity of the cerebral palsy, the presence of scoliosis or other spinal issues, and the Orthopaedic specialist's recommendations.
3. Implementing Preventive Measures: 🧑‍⚕️Paediatric Physiotherapists will recommend various strategies like dynamic garment orthosis, strengthening exercises, or rigid bracing to help stabilise the spine and prevent scoliosis from worsening.
4. Referral for Specialised Care: If significant spinal deformities are detected or if conservative treatments are not sufficient, children with cerebral palsy will be referred to Scoliosis Clinic for further evaluation and possible surgical intervention.👨‍⚕️

😬Have you noticed that your toddler 🧒is moving awkwardly compared to other toddlers
🤔Wondering if it's a movement pattern that you should be concerned about or hoping 🤞that it's just a phase that they will grow out of.

Here at Sydney Kids Physio, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists 🤓see many babies, toddlers and children 🧒who come in with concerns about the way that they are moving when they roll, crawl, stand up, walk, and run. Often we find that parents 👨are correct when they feel that there's something odd about their child's movement patterns. 😓Unfortunately, many parents would have waited and watched and hoped that their child would grow out of their "odd movement patterns" until 12 months has passed before taking action to see an Expert Paediatric Physiotherapist for an assessment.

So here are 3 Common Adaptive Movement Patterns to look out for:
😬1. A child using their hands to lift their legs to move in and out of positions of play.
😬2. A child moves into a "bear stance" on their hands and feet and then walks backwards with their hands, to push their hands on their thighs to be able to stand up. Or they are needing to hold onto the wall to stand up.
😬3. A child is waddling side to side when they are walking, swinging their whole body side to side to fling their legs around to take a step forward.

If you noticed that your toddler 👧is demonstrating any of these 3 adaptive movement patterns, you need to see your Paediatrician or an Expert Paediatric Physiotherapist 🤓as soon as possible to have your child assessed. Paediatric Physiotherapy Early Intervention is often the key 🔑to helping children correct the adaptive movement patterns to improve their gross motor skills. Is your 9 month old baby 👶🏻not yet crawling
🤔Wondering if crawling is important because your mother 👵🏻said you just got up and walked 🚶‍♀️without crawling

As more and more babies 👶🏻are not placed on the floor on their tummies to play and explore, more and more children are missing the gross motor milestone of crawling. 🥺This has reached a point where there is now debate about crawling as a necessary milestone for babies. 🤔
Here at Sydney Kids Physio, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists🤓 believe that crawling between the age of 6 to 10 months is an essential foundation for a child's gross motor skills development for later on when they are older and at school. 🧒

🔥🔥🔥3 reasons why crawling is important for a baby's development
1. Baby learns the transition movements of moving in and out of position such as lying to sitting, sitting to crawling, crawling to pulling to stand. It is important to be able to independently move in and out of positions with ease.

2. Crawling requires a reciprocal movement of opposite arms and legs, which allows baby to strengthen their hip and pelvic gridle.🦵 Children who miss the crawling stage, tend to have poor balance and coordination at 4 years old because they do not have the pelvic stability and strength to do one leg activities like hopping.

3. Crawling also build core strength and shoulder gridle strength 💪which is crucial for helping babies learn to sit upright to use their arms for feeding, table top play and dressing activities. Children 👧who do not crawl will tend to struggle with sitting at a desk for writing and fine motor tasks like cutting and drawling at 4 years old.

😬 Have you noticed that your 19 month old toddler is stiff in their legs and struggling to stand by themselves?
🥺Been watching and waiting for your toddler to walk by themselves, but they are now over 18 months old and not looking like they can stand balance by themselves yet?

Here at Sydney Kids Physio, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists 🤓often meet parents who are concerned about their toddlers who are not yet walking and they are older than 18 months old. Recently, our team met Ms F, who is 19 months old 👧and not yet walking by herself. Her mother expressed concerns that Ms F seems very stiff in her legs and she is dragging one leg more than the other when she tries to walk.

On assessment, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists were able to determine that Ms F has Cerebral Palsy affecting both arms and legs, with her right arm and leg more affected than her left. As a result of the increased muscle tone in her legs, she struggling to place her feet down and keep her balance. We commenced Early Intervention Physiotherapy immediately, starting with Radial Shockwave therapy to reduce the muscle tone in her legs so that she can learn to place her feet down flat on the ground. And then she was harnessed onto our Treadmill Walking System to learn to walk while her body weight was supported.🚶‍♀️

Within 3 sessions of Physiotherapy, Ms F started to take steps to walk all by herself!! 🥳 Her mother was thrilled at the rapid progress she made with Physiotherapy and wished she had come to Paediatric Physiotherapy sooner! Ms F will need to continue Early Intervention Paediatric Physiotherapy to improve her core strength, leg strength, maintain her calf muscle length, improve her balance and coordination to help her achieve age appropriate gross motor skills as she grows. However, her future is looking bright and we are excited to see her hit her milestones!

So if you are concerned about your little one's gross motor skills, instead of watching and waiting, ring Sydney Kids Physio on 📱(02) 9790 4233 or DM us today!

🥺Have you been told that you are expecting a baby with Down Syndrome and you should consider terminating your pregnancy?
😳Been told that life with a child with Down Syndrome will be challenging as they will have a multitude of medical complications?

Down syndrome is the most commonly occurring chromosomal condition with approximately 1 in every 1100 babies born in Australia diagnosed with Down syndrome. 👶🏻This means that approximately 290 babies with Down syndrome are born each year.

Here at Sydney Kids Physio, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists 🤓see many babies with Down Syndrome to help them learn to roll, sit, crawl and walk. Here are 3 Common Myths that parents expecting babies with Down Syndrome are told:
👎Myth #1:
Babies with Down Syndrome will not walk until they are 4-5 years old.
👍Truth #1:
Babies with Down Syndrome have low muscle tone and will require Early Intervention Paediatric Physiotherapy to help them learn to roll, sit, crawl and walk. At My Favourite Physio, the babies we see at 3-5 months old achieve independent walking without aids by 18 months old, like typically developing children.

👎Myth #2:
Babies with Down Syndrome will have multiple medical complications, like heart conditions, cleft palates, feeding difficulties.
👍Truth #2:
Babies with Down Syndrome may have multiple medical complications but not ALL babies with Down Syndrome will have all the possible medical complications. About 50% of babies with Down Syndrome have heart conditions, which can be treated successfully with surgery. Many of the babies we see in our clinic, do not have any heart conditions, feeding issues or cleft palates.

👎Myth #3:
Babies with Down Syndrome will have intellectual difficulties and will need to attend Special School.
👍Truth #3:
Statistic indicate that 46% of children with Down Syndrome attend mainstream school and 8% attend mixed mainstream/special school.

A new school term begins soon again. 📚
Is your child's backpack 🎒still fitting them well?
Is your child complaining of back and neck 😳pain?

Too often students are carrying around very heavy weights on their back - particularly those in high school. An overloaded or incorrectly-worn backpack 🎒can be a major source of chronic strain, and can cause shoulder, neck and back pain in children. Stress put on the spine can cause your child to lean too far forward and experience distortion of the natural curve, rolling their shoulders and causing a more rounded upper-back. Neck and shoulder 😳 pain can also develop from wearing a bag on one shoulder, or a bag with straps that are too thin that dig into the shoulder muscles and strain the neck.

A good supportive backpack correctly worn can prevent back and neck pain.

Not sure if your child's back pack is suitable for them, ring Sydney Kids Physio 📱on (02) 9790 4233 or DM us to book a Back to School Backpack Check today. Let us help your child overcome Back and Neck😳 Pain today!
