🧠✨ Teaching your child the concepts of long and short can be simple, fun, and full of everyday learning moments! Here's how you can make it part of playtime:

🔍 Start with objects:

Compare a long spoon and a short spoon at breakfast

Line up toy cars or pencils and talk about which is longer or shorter

Use ribbons, sticks, or playdough to make "long" and "short" versions

🎶 Sing it out:
Try a song with actions like “This is long, this is short” while stretching your arms wide, then bringing them close.

📏 Measure it together:
Use your hands or a simple tape measure to "measure" toys, shoes, or even hair! Talk about what’s longer or shorter.

🌳 Go outside:
Find long and short sticks, leaves, shadows or paths. Nature is full of chances to compare and explore!

📚 Read books:
Choose stories that use describing words like “long tail” or “short legs” to build understanding through language.

Learning concepts like long and short helps with vocabulary, early maths, and thinking skills all through PLAY! 💬🧩💡

✨ Literacy Hint: Bossy e / Magic e! ✨
Did you know a sneaky little 'e' at the end of a word can completely change its sound and meaning? That’s the magic of the Bossy e! 🧙‍♂️📚

When Bossy e shows up, it makes the vowel say its name, turning a short vowel sound into a long vowel sound! 🎶

Watch it work:
👒 Hat ➡️ Hate (short A ➡️ long A)
🧰 Kit ➡️ Kite (short I ➡️ long I)
✂️ Cut ➡️ Cute (short U ➡️ long U)
🧢 Cap ➡️ Cape (short A ➡️ long A)

🧠 This is a fun and visual way to teach young readers how one little letter can make a BIG difference in how a word sounds and what it means!

🧩 Why do Speech Pathologists love puzzles?

Because they’re so much more than just a quiet activity!

✨ Puzzles support a whole range of skills we target in therapy:

🔹 Fine Motor Skills – Picking up and placing pieces strengthens those tiny hand muscles needed for writing, drawing and using tools.

🔹 Cognitive Development – As children move from chunky peg puzzles to more complex jigsaws, they learn problem-solving, planning and spatial awareness.

🔹 Communication Growth – Puzzles are a perfect opportunity to build language: ➡️ Label pieces (“dog,” “car,” “corner”)
➡️ Use location words (“up,” “next to,” “under”)
➡️ Practise turn-taking, requesting and commenting (“My turn!”, “Where does this go?”)

🔹 Vocabulary Boost – Themes like animals, transport or the alphabet help kids learn new words in a meaningful and fun way.

🗣️ Whether it’s your child’s first k**b puzzle or they’re ready for 48 pieces, puzzles are a powerful tool to support speech, language and learning.

❤️ So yes, we really do love puzzles and they’re a staple in every speechie’s toolkit!

🌀 Wobble Cushions = Focus Superpower for Kids! 🌀

If your child fidgets at the table, struggles to sit still for schoolwork, or just has extra energy to burn, a wobble cushion might be your new best friend! 🙌
These clever little seats:
✔️ Encourage core strength & better posture
✔️ Help with sensory regulation
✔️ Improve focus and attention
✔️ Let kids move while they sit (win-win!)

And guess what? ALDI has them on sale right now for just $10! 🎉

Such a bargain for something that can make such a big difference at home or in the classroom.

Need an indoor, weatherproof idea for the school holidays??

Go to at Sydney Olympic Park!

I went with my children today and had the best time!

There are so many communication moments from "loud", "up", "sparkly", and "pop". We practised our adjectives, following instructions and requests too!

The trip was so worth it!

Please be aware that there are SOO many moments that can be overwhelming for some children I.e. strobe lighting, lots of people, loud noises and a lot of different textures. Please take this into consideration when attending!

Today we had so much fun learning the concepts: clean and dirty!

How did we do this? I gave this little boy a tub of dirt and a tub of water and let him wash the 'dirty' animals until they were 'clean'. I absolutely love finding fun ways to teach vocabulary!

April 2nd is Autism Awareness Day – a day that means so much to me! 💙

I first began working with autistic children in 2011, and I instantly fell in love with helping them communicate and connect with others. Not long after, I became the sole speech pathologist at an autism school, supporting around 160 incredible kids. My goal was always to make communication easier, and one of the ways I did this was by implementing playground communication boards.

Now, 14 years later, I’ve had the privilege of helping hundreds of autistic children find their voice. It’s my greatest passion! 💙✨

I hope Autism Awareness Day continues to spread understanding, support, and inclusion for these amazing individuals.

💙

April 1st is all about jokes and laughter but understanding humour and sarcasm can be tricky for some kids. It’s an important social skill that helps build friendships and connect with others.

Some kids, especially those who think literally, might not always get the joke. Here’s how we can help them learn:

🧩 Explain the joke – Talk about why something is funny so they start to see patterns in humour
😆 Practise playful jokes – Show them how to joke in a way that’s lighthearted and kind
🎭 Look for clues – Help them notice tone of voice, facial expressions and body language that signal sarcasm
❤️ Keep it kind – Remind them that jokes should make everyone feel good, not hurt or embarrass others

Is your child bored with their toys?

You’ve got plenty, but somehow… they’re still bored.

Here are a few easy tricks to bring the fun back:

🧸 Move them around – A toy feels new when it’s in a different spot. My son hadn’t touched this toy in months—until Grandma moved it to the outside table. Now, he’s obsessed with it again!

🔄 Rotate toys – Pack some away and swap them every few weeks. Less mess, more excitement when they return!

🎨 Mix things up – Who says toy animals can’t live in a dollhouse? Or jump over a LEGO tower? Let their imagination lead the way.

Sometimes, a little change makes all the difference.

Did you know that babies can understand and express themselves before they start talking? Using baby signs (Key Word Signs) can reduce frustration, foster connection, and give your little one a voice while their speech is still developing!

I started signing with my baby at 6 months, and now at 2 years old, he continues to sign in environments where we can't hear each other such as the swimming pool and from far away in the playground.

✨ Why use baby signs?
✅ Encourages early communication
✅ Reduces tantrums by meeting needs quickly
✅ Boosts language development
✅ Strengthens parent-child bonding

💡 Easy signs to start with:
👉 More
👉 Finish
👉 Drink

It’s never too early (or too late) to start – consistency is key! 🌟

*Australian signs are different from other countries (and Ms Rachel)

📣 Early Intervention Matters! 🗣️

Did you know that the earlier a child starts speech therapy, the better the outcomes?

If your child is struggling to communicate, produce sounds correctly, or speak fluently, early support can make a world of difference! Here’s why:

✅ Brain Development: Young brains are like sponges—early intervention takes advantage of this critical period for learning and growth.
✅ Improved Communication: Early speech therapy helps children express their thoughts and needs, reducing frustration and boosting confidence.
✅ Stronger Social Skills: Clearer communication helps kids build better relationships with peers and adults.
✅ Academic Success: Language skills are the foundation for reading, writing, and future learning—early support sets the stage for school readiness.

💡 And remember—there’s no harm in getting an assessment! A speech assessment can provide clarity and peace of mind, helping you decide if support is needed.

If you have concerns about your child’s speech or language, trust your instincts and reach out. Early help is powerful, and every small step counts!
