Today we had so much fun learning the concepts: clean and dirty!

How did we do this? I gave this little boy a tub of dirt and a tub of water and let him wash the 'dirty' animals until they were 'clean'. I absolutely love finding fun ways to teach vocabulary!

April 2nd is Autism Awareness Day – a day that means so much to me! 💙

I first began working with autistic children in 2011, and I instantly fell in love with helping them communicate and connect with others. Not long after, I became the sole speech pathologist at an autism school, supporting around 160 incredible kids. My goal was always to make communication easier, and one of the ways I did this was by implementing playground communication boards.

Now, 14 years later, I’ve had the privilege of helping hundreds of autistic children find their voice. It’s my greatest passion! 💙✨

I hope Autism Awareness Day continues to spread understanding, support, and inclusion for these amazing individuals.

💙

April 1st is all about jokes and laughter but understanding humour and sarcasm can be tricky for some kids. It’s an important social skill that helps build friendships and connect with others.

Some kids, especially those who think literally, might not always get the joke. Here’s how we can help them learn:

🧩 Explain the joke – Talk about why something is funny so they start to see patterns in humour
😆 Practise playful jokes – Show them how to joke in a way that’s lighthearted and kind
🎭 Look for clues – Help them notice tone of voice, facial expressions and body language that signal sarcasm
❤️ Keep it kind – Remind them that jokes should make everyone feel good, not hurt or embarrass others

Is your child bored with their toys?

You’ve got plenty, but somehow… they’re still bored.

Here are a few easy tricks to bring the fun back:

🧸 Move them around – A toy feels new when it’s in a different spot. My son hadn’t touched this toy in months—until Grandma moved it to the outside table. Now, he’s obsessed with it again!

🔄 Rotate toys – Pack some away and swap them every few weeks. Less mess, more excitement when they return!

🎨 Mix things up – Who says toy animals can’t live in a dollhouse? Or jump over a LEGO tower? Let their imagination lead the way.

Sometimes, a little change makes all the difference.

Did you know that babies can understand and express themselves before they start talking? Using baby signs (Key Word Signs) can reduce frustration, foster connection, and give your little one a voice while their speech is still developing!

I started signing with my baby at 6 months, and now at 2 years old, he continues to sign in environments where we can't hear each other such as the swimming pool and from far away in the playground.

✨ Why use baby signs?
✅ Encourages early communication
✅ Reduces tantrums by meeting needs quickly
✅ Boosts language development
✅ Strengthens parent-child bonding

💡 Easy signs to start with:
👉 More
👉 Finish
👉 Drink

It’s never too early (or too late) to start – consistency is key! 🌟

*Australian signs are different from other countries (and Ms Rachel)

📣 Early Intervention Matters! 🗣️

Did you know that the earlier a child starts speech therapy, the better the outcomes?

If your child is struggling to communicate, produce sounds correctly, or speak fluently, early support can make a world of difference! Here’s why:

✅ Brain Development: Young brains are like sponges—early intervention takes advantage of this critical period for learning and growth.
✅ Improved Communication: Early speech therapy helps children express their thoughts and needs, reducing frustration and boosting confidence.
✅ Stronger Social Skills: Clearer communication helps kids build better relationships with peers and adults.
✅ Academic Success: Language skills are the foundation for reading, writing, and future learning—early support sets the stage for school readiness.

💡 And remember—there’s no harm in getting an assessment! A speech assessment can provide clarity and peace of mind, helping you decide if support is needed.

If you have concerns about your child’s speech or language, trust your instincts and reach out. Early help is powerful, and every small step counts!

At six months old, your baby is starting to explore sounds, gestures, and early social interactions. Here are some ways to encourage their communication skills:

1. Talk to Your Baby Often
✔️Narrate daily activities: "Now we're changing your nappy"
✔️Use simple, clear speech with exaggerated intonation.
✔️Pause after speaking to encourage them to "respond" with coos or babbling.

2. Encourage Babbling
✔️Imitate their sounds to create a "conversation."
✔️Respond enthusiastically to encourage more vocalising.

3. Use Songs and Rhymes
✔️Sing nursery rhymes with gestures (e.g., "Twinkle, Twinkle" or "Pat-a-Cake").
✔️Rhythmic songs help babies recognise patterns in language.

4. Read Together
✔️Use board books with bright pictures and simple text.
✔️Point to objects and name them.
✔️Use different voices to make stories engaging.

5. Make Eye Contact and Use Facial Expressions
✔️Babies learn a lot from watching your face.
✔️Exaggerate expressions to show emotions (smiling, surprised face, etc.).

6. Play Interactive Games
✔️Peek-a-boo teaches turn-taking in conversation.
✔️"So big" (lifting their arms when you say "How big is baby?") encourages engagement.

7. Encourage Gestures
✔️Wave “bye-bye” and clap hands to model non-verbal communication.
✔️Show simple baby signs (e.g., "milk" or "more").

8. Minimize Screen Time and Maximize Interaction
✔️Babies learn best through live interactions rather than videos.
✔️Focus on face-to-face communication and real-life experiences.

At this stage, the goal is to make communication fun and engaging! Even simple interactions build a strong foundation for speech and language development.

🌟 Inclusive Playgrounds Matter! 🌟

Spotted this fantastic Play Communication Board at the playground today! These boards are a game-changer for inclusion, helping children of all abilities express their wants, needs, and feelings while they play.

💬 Why are they important?
✔️ Support children with communication difficulties, including those who are non-verbal or have speech delays.
✔️ Encourage peer interactions by giving kids a shared way to communicate.
✔️ Promote independence and confidence in making choices.
✔️ Create a more welcoming and accessible play space for everyone.

Play is for ALL kids, and communication boards like this ensure that every child has a voice in their play! 🎡💛

Let’s talk Easter gifts! 🐣🎁 If you’re like me and hate giving your child loads of sugar, here are some great Easter gift ideas instead:

1️⃣ Books 📚 – You can work on speech sounds, labelling, sentence structure, and pointing. Absolutely any speech goal can be targeted using books!

2️⃣ Dress-up bunnies 🐰👕 – I’m currently teaching my two-year-old vocabulary around clothes, including types of clothes (e.g., socks), concepts (e.g., clean/dirty), and prepositions (e.g., on/off).

3️⃣ Paint plasters 🎨 – So much fun! You can teach colours, wet/dry, and even how to mix colours to create new ones.

4️⃣ Vegetable shape sorter 🥕🧩 – This adorable Easter-themed gift works on fine motor skills while supporting language goals like in/out and yes/no.

✨ What are your favourite non-chocolate Easter gifts? Let me know in the comments!

As a paediatric speech pathologist 🗣️ and a mother of two boys 💙💙, I believe in the power of communication 🗨️, confidence ✨, and kindness ❤️.

Today, I celebrate the incredible women 👩‍🏫👩‍⚕️👩‍👧‍👦 who nurture, educate 📚, and advocate 💪—not just for themselves, but for the next generation 🌍.
Raising boys to respect, listen to, and uplift others is one of the most important things I can do as a mother 🤱. And as a therapist, I see every day how strong, compassionate women—mothers, teachers, and professionals—make a difference in children’s lives 🧠👧👦.

Here’s to the women who use their voice 🗣️ to create change and to those raising the future with love and equality ⚖️.

💜 🗣️ 🧠 💙👦
