Strategies to nurture your child's language development:

🌸 Naming: During play, frequently name target words to expose your child to their names. Instead of asking "What's that?", provide the names of objects as they may not have the language skills to respond yet.

🌸 Commenting: Engage in conversation by describing activities, objects, and experiences. Use short phrases and repeat key words. Your child doesn't need to respond or imitate; the focus is on immersing them in language during play and actions.

🌸 Choices: Encourage interaction and language use by offering choices. Make choices visual whenever possible, presenting options while naming each one. Let your child respond through pointing, words, sounds, or gestures, and clearly name their chosen item.

🌸 Pausing: Create anticipation and give your child time to listen, understand, and respond by pausing. Show them you're waiting for a reply with an expectant look. If they don't respond, you can say the words you hoped they would use.

🌸 Copy and Add: When your child says a single word, repeat it back to them and add another word to model longer phrases. For example, if they say "cat", copy and add to make "big cat". This can also be done when your child says phrases such as "girl jumping" - copy and add in the missing elements to make "the girl is jumping".

Understanding and using verbs is an important part of language development!
They’re action words - like go, eat, open, play, push - that help your child express what’s happening.

Verbs help kids move from single words to two-word phrases like “go car” or “eat snack.” 🌸

Expressive & Receptive Language ⭐️

Expressive Language is how a child uses language — through words, gestures, or symbols to communicate their thoughts, wants, and needs.⁣

Receptive Language is how a child understands and comprehends spoken language — like following directions or understanding what’s being said.⁣

Both are essential for strong communication skills 💛⁣
