Have you injured your calf recently? Does it keep happening? Is your treatment plan to rest, then play on?! Read why this is not the best strategy
If you recently strained your calf this is your ACTION PLAN
🚦 Rest, but not completely. Keep moving, but remember, your calf works hard with walking and faster walking in particular so don't go nuts with your steps in the first few days - (check out our other post on the POLICE protocol)
💪 Start your strength training early i.e. as soon as able (likely when you are still a little sore). Ultimately, you will need to do calf work with heavy weights to see results
🏃‍♂️ Get advice on returning to running and sport - see your physiotherapist to help determine when you are able to start training and return to games. Recurrent calf strains in particular need a management plan in regards to running loads, don't guess it!
🤔 Consider contributing factors, in my experience, calves can be undertrained and also poorly worked in the gym. Don't skip leg day! Consider single leg stability as well

🚦 Rest, but not completely. Even higher grade hamstring injuries can be moved and 'loaded' early, this might include light walking or light jogging in the first week (check out our other post on the POLICE protocol)
💪 Start your strength training early i.e. as soon as able (likely when you are still a little sore)
🏃‍♂️ Get advice on returning to running and sport - see your physiotherapist to help determine when you are able to start training and return to games, don't guess it!

I’ve been enjoying running slower lately - I was struggling with my heart rate sitting above 180bpm for an entire 5kms run - not the most comfortable feeling! So I thought, why not just run slower?

My brain doesn’t usually do that, if I run, I just go out as hard as I can manage for the entire run, but I’ve been loving a slower pace 🧡

My shins are happier too! 🙌

To keep our practice up to date with evidence, the ‘new’ POLICE protocol is more in line with how we want to manage soft tissue injuries in their early stages. The RICE principle leaves out some key details in managing these injuries, but you will notice similarities!

The POLICE acronym stands for:
🚦Protect
💪Optimal Loading
🧊Ice
🤕Compression
🆙Elevation

If you have recently strained a muscle, or torn a ligament, use the POLICE protocol!

Mmmmm not sure about that!
Do you have a standing desk? Are you more comfortable there? Do you want a standing desk because you think it will solve your aches and pains?

There is no one perfect posture! And there is no evidence that 'good posture' reduces your chance of back pain.
