Following on from our last post about Ginkgo biloba...

An important distinction to be made when looking at the two previously mentioned reviews, is that the studies were investigating the effect of Ginkgo biloba in healthy people.

In a later overview of systematic reviews by Zhang et al. in 2016, the authors concluded that Ginkgo biloba has a clear therapeutic benefit in those with mild cognitive impairment and dementia (always consult with a suitably qualified practitioner to assess your individual health case before using natural medicines).

Cognitive benefits were matched by dose and ginkgo biloba reduced vertigo, tinnitus and headaches.

The jury is still out on whether this herbal medicine can be used prophylactically for dementia in healthy people.

Ginkgo biloba 🌱🧠 NOOTROPIC?

In herbal medicine we use this herb (after a thorough individual case assessment) typically to improve blood flow to the brain, and microvascular endothelial integrity. It's also a blood thinner (careful)!

I was wondering if there is evidence for ginkgo as a NOOTROPIC specifically, and found the two below studies.

A meta analysis (statistical analysis of combined results of clinical trials) published in 2012, concluded that Ginkgo had no tangible effect on executive function, memory or attention in healthy people (Laws et al. 2012).

Another systematic review of clinical trials published in 2007 also concluded that Ginkgo isn't a NOOTROPIC (smart drug) in healthy people (Canter et al. 2007).

This is interesting!

More soon.. 🧠🌱

NOOTROPICS are substances that enhance memory and learning 🧠 aka "smart drugs"..

Derived from Latin "noos" meaning thinking, and "tropein" meaning to guide (Malik & Tlustos, 2022).

Plant NOOTROPICS can have a powerful effect, BUT you have to do the foundational work for best results.
