Kombucha tea is a fermented drink which has recently become very trendy but has been traditionally known as the ‘elixir of health’ for centuries in many countries around the world.

Kombucha contains a special blend of good bacteria and yeasts, known as probiotics and is made by fermenting these with tea leaves, water and sugar. Fear not – the sugar is consumed by the good bacteria and does not remain in the final product. Fruits may be added in the secondary fermentation phase, resulting in a delicious taste (my personal fave is pear and ginger!)

Kombucha tea is easy to make at home and is very safe if prepared according to directions. Kombucha is consumed as a cold drink to ensure the survival of its beneficial enzymes, microorganisms and vitamins.

The many health benefits of Kombucha tea means that it certainly earns it place as a ‘superfood’ and is an easy way to get more fermented foods in your diet (without having to compromise on taste!) Health benefits include: improved digestion and gut health (including fighting candida); immune boosting; prevention and treatment of joint issues (including arthritis), increased collagen (read: less wrinkles!); improved liver detoxification and also contains particularly high levels of B-vitamins and antioxidants.

When you start to plan conception, it’s a great idea to have a thorough health check to make sure you are in top shape for a healthy conception – remember, each of you is only donating one cell each to this potential baby! Get some bloods done and start to work on a healthy diet and lifestyle.

If you have been trying for more than 6 months, don’t worry (this is still VERY normal) but it might be time to get a few tests done (for BOTH partners) – better to check that your tubes are clear and that the s***m quality is good before it’s been too long.

A Fertility Naturopath can help you organize other tests at this time too.

Supporting your immune system especially over Winter is super important.

My top vitamins for immune support are:
vitamin C
vitamin D
zinc
probiotics;
and the herbs Andrographis, Olive Leaf, Echinacea and Cat’s Claw.

It’s a great time to do a quick check in with your Naturopath to make sure you have a plan for if you start feeling run down or unwell!

There are also some great immune supplements for kids which you can check out in my online store (most of the kids immune products don’t need a prescription which is great!)

AND don’t forget to also use food to boost your immune system – load up on garlic, onion, leek, parsley, sh*take mushrooms and ginger to keep your immune system strong and healthy!

Where do goats cheese is rich in calcium, protein and vitamins, goats cheese has less lactose and is generally easier to digest than cow’s milk cheese.

Goats cheese has a distinctive flavour and thus may not be as moreish as cows milk cheese- but this does also help with portion control!

Sprinkle goats cheese on salads or into omelettes.

You’ve probably heard of the “love” or “bonding” hormone, oxytocin. This is a peptide hormone, which acts as both a hormone and a brain neurotransmitter. It is known as the love hormone because it is released during contact with a loved one.

Oxytocin is made in the hypothalamus and transported and secreted by the pituitary gland at the base of the brain. Its release also helps with childbirth and breastfeeding.

In terms of its relation to mental health, oxytocin is known to have an anti-anxiety effect and may help to relieve social anxiety. Research shows that oxytocin promotes relaxation and trust, which makes it easier to manage social situations.4In fact, studies are ongoing on the role of oxytocin and how it could be used in the treatment of social impairments (including the social challenges of autism).

Why you need to be eating those dark leafy greens!

🥬 They are full of antioxidants, including carotenoids, which have been shown to protect against free-radical damage.

🥬 Just one serve of spinach (1/2 cup cooked or 1 cup raw) provides more than half of your vitamin A needs.

🥬 Good source of folate, vitamin K, and magnesium.

🥬 Provides fiber for optimal digestion and even 3 grams of protein per serving

Throw them in a smoothie (you won’t even taste it!), add them in a pesto, blitz and stir through a soup, or add them to a juice - there are plenty of ways to ‘sneak’ them in if you don’t like the taste.

Pesto was a great source of ‘good’ fats and nutrition.

Pesto is made from basil, olive oil, garlic, pine nuts and Parmesan cheese. It is really easy to make it home by blending these ingredients, although ready-made versions are common. Just make sure when you’re buying ready-made products that the olive oil has not been replaced with a cheaper and hormone-unfriendly canola oil or another vegetable oil.

Pesto is versatile and is delicious in salads, stirred through vegetables or served with eggs for an extra boost of protein and good fats.

Food cravings can often be a telltale sign that our bodies are deficient in a particular nutrient or nutrients. When we crave healthy (unprocessed) foods such as red meat, it can often be a sign that our body may require nutrients contained in the food such as protein or iron.

Cravings for unhealthy foods usually signifies a nutritional deficiency which is not corrected by eating that particular food!

High sugar diets increase the excretion of a mineral called chromium which can lead to further sugar cravings. Chromium helps insulin to metabolise sugar, minimize food cravings and suppress hunger. Giving into to those sugar cravings will only lead to more cravings!

Cravings for sugar or high-carbohydrate foods before or during a period are common. These cravings are usually due to low blood sugar levels which become more unstable around menstruation. Eating small, regular protein-containing meals at this time can help to stabilize blood sugar levels and reduce unhealthy cravings.
