HOW ARE YOUR STRESS LEVELS?

For most of us, we need some stress to be able to perform best. If we have no stress at all, we risk boredom, lack of innovation/creativity and pursing dreams.
If we have too much stress we risk burnout, social and professional withdrawal and mental illness.

Like with many things in life, balance is important. I often suggest to patients who are highly stressed that they are operating at or above 100% emotional capacity, and thus have no ability to surge when life throws challenges up, which is inevitably does.
Sometimes this requires some hard self-reflection, some hard conversations with family/friends/work colleagues around adjusting your priorities of what you are juggling. But ultimately it is worth it for your own happiness, productivity, physical and mental health.

Do you need to reduce your commitments to reach a better balance? Perhaps you are bored due to lack of stress and you need to challenge yourself more. Whatever the issue, we wish you all the best at achieving that balance.
If you need professional help to discuss these kind of matters, our doctors and psychologists are more than happy to help you.

PARKINSONS DISEASE AND GUT MICROBIOTA

Could a simple vitamin therapy assist some patients with Parkinsons disease?
Check out this excellent article on the links between gut health, gut microbiome, environmental toxins, B vitamins and Parkinsons disease.

Researchers have suspected for some time that the link between our gut and brain plays a role in the development of Parkinson's disease.

BENEFITS OF HOT/COLD SHOWERS

A perhaps little known technique that appears beneficial to the immune system is the use of hydrotherapy utilising hot/cold water alternating.

With the amount of viruses and other infections spreading around presently, we are seeing a lot of people off work or school due to illness.
If you have courage, when you are unwell (or to prevent becoming unwell) try using a hot/cold alternating shower technique to enhance your bodies immune function to fight off or prevent infection.

Try 3-4 mins of hot water, followed by 30-60 seconds of cold water, then back to 3-4 mins of hot, You can repeat this up to 3-4 x in a row, and end on cold. It gets easier with successive cold shower intervals - the first time is always the hardest, but the benefits are worth it.

You can also use cold showers/water immersion to recover after significant exercise.

A cold shower can have benefits including pain relief and a mood boost. Learn how just a few minutes of cold therapy during your shower might be good for you.

Another study pointing out the benefits of FIBRE! Take home message - eat more of it!

When it comes to protecting ourselves from chronic disease, we need to be mindful of the type of carbs we eat. We want to avoid eating ultra-processed carbs high in starch and sugar and low in fiber.

A high-carb, ultra-processed diet spikes our blood sugar, which drives insulin levels up, creates oxidative stress, and leads to accelerated aging, shortened life expectancy, and increased risk for chronic diseases like obesity, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and even cancer over time.

When you eat carbohydrates, choose high-fiber sources with a low glycemic impact (that means they won’t spike your blood sugar). Berries, leafy green vegetables, legumes, and whole unprocessed grains are good sources.

Have you tried increasing the fiber in your diet, and have you noticed a difference?
