This year’s International Women’s Day theme “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.” calls for collective action to unlock equal rights, power and opportunities for all and a feminist future where no one is left behind.

RANZCOG has long been shining a spotlight on the significant systemic gender-gaps in healthcare – for both women and girls accessing care, as well as those providing it. From access and medical research gaps to financial disparities, bias, stigma, and systemic injustices, gender inequality permeates every aspect of our health system—affecting care, outcomes, and opportunities for women and health professionals alike.

Whilst today is a time to celebrate women in all their diversities and acknowledge the progress made, there is still a long road ahead. RANZCOG reaffirms its commitment to breaking down barriers, challenging inequities, and driving policies that support equal rights and health outcomes for ALL women and girls.

RANZCOG will continue advocating to make meaningful policy change towards equitable access to women’s health services across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. Equity is firmly entrenched as a priority within the College’s strategic plan, and specifically tackling gender bias in care, research, systems and policy is a key objective for the College’s advocacy function.

From 3 February 2025, pregnant women will be offered a free Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) vaccine to protect their newborns.

RSV can cause serious illness in newborn babies. It is recommended that pregnant women receive the vaccine at 28 weeks in pregnancy with the whooping cough (pertussis) vaccine, but it can be given anytime between 28 and 36 weeks.

Vaccines given in pregnancy will help your baby off to a healthy start in life.

To learn more, speak to your GP, pharmacist or midwife or visit health.nsw.gov.au/rsv

Did you know that women and men can experience the same health condition differently? For example, women can have different heart attack symptoms to men.

Despite this, medical research has traditionally focused on the male experience of health conditions – and health care and medicines have been largely designed to work for men.

The result?

“Women are missing out on the best health care – not just in Australia, but across the world,” says our CEO Dr Sarah White.

But, she adds: “There’s a growing chorus of women demanding better in terms of their health care, and Jean Hailes is right here for it.”

Together, let's push for research and health care that takes s*x and gender into account.

For more of Dr White’s insights on gender differences, check out the link in the comments.

Curious about caffeine during pregnancy?

It’s all about moderation! Research suggests that consuming up to 200mg of caffeine per day is generally considered safe for most pregnant women. However, it’s important to be mindful of all sources of caffeine, including tea, chocolate, and some medications for example.

Excessive caffeine intake has been linked to an increased risk of low birth weight and preterm birth. Always consult with your healthcare provider to understand what’s best for you and your baby. Enjoy your favorite cup, but keep it moderate for a healthy pregnancy!
