Eastside Speech Solutions

Eastside Speech Solutions A vibrant Speech Pathology practice in Randwick, Sydney. Eastside Speech Solutions is passionate about helping people to communicate better.

Every day we witness how lives are transformed when a person's ability to speak and understand dramatically improves. One in seven Australians experience some form of communication disability during their lifetime. Developing and maintaining the ability to communicate is a journey we all take starting as a toddler first mimicking our parents, to a preschooler learning to speak smoothly and correctly without stuttering, then as a school aged child we begin to read and speak with confidence through to becoming an adult who relies on clear speech for work and play. Better communication is what we are all about! The team at Eastside Speech understand that sometimes the journey to good communication is not easy and believe that effective, positive speech therapy can be the key to improved confidence at school, in work and in relationships. We offer a wide range of speech therapies to assist with literacy, difficulties saying sounds correctly (pronunciation), stuttering, apraxia, language comprehension or language delay, accent modification and accent reduction as well as working with those suffering communication impairment as a result of brain injury, stroke or other neurological conditions. Eastside Speech Solutions understands that adults and children are different and we tailor our therapy sessions to accommodate individual's needs and abilities. The team's experience allows us to focus our speech therapy to support and develop good communication regardless of whether we are helping adults or preschoolers, native speakers or clients from overseas. Our clients reap the benefits of the teamwork of a group of therapists with a broad range of experience. Contact us on 9313 8980 to discuss how we could help you or a family member communicate better.

👂✨ Auditory Bombardment at Home

Auditory bombardment – hearing a speech sound repeated in lots of words throughout the day – helps children notice and learn that sound. The more they hear it in different contexts, the easier it becomes to say it themselves.

Pick a sound your child is starting to learn to pronounce, and see how many objects you can find around the house starting with that sound! 🏠🔎

No need to correct them — just model, model, model! 💬😊

Turn your Easter egg hunt into a fun speech & language activity 🐣🥚

You can support your child’s communication skills while they play — no extra prep needed!

✨ Try this during your egg hunt:
• “I found a…”
• “It’s big/small/blue…”
• “Put it in, on, under…”
• “Where is the egg?”
• “My turn / your turn”

👉 Follow your child’s lead, keep it fun, and focus on connection 💛

At Eastside, we know how precious time with our children is 💛

Family life can be busy, but meaningful connection doesn’t have to take hours. The “9-Minute Rule,” developed by neuroscientist Jaak Panksepp, encourages three small moments of connection each day:

✨ 3 minutes after your child wakes up
✨ 3 minutes when they come home from school
✨ 3 minutes before bedtime

These short, intentional moments help children feel connected, supported, and secure — while also strengthening communication.

Sometimes it’s the smallest moments of connection that make the biggest difference.

🌱 Spending time in the garden with your child isn’t just great for fresh air and exploration — it’s also full of natural opportunities to support speech and language development.

Here are a few easy ways to turn gardening time into language practice:

🌼 “I see…” sentences 🌼
Encourage your child to describe what they notice:
“I see a snail.”
“I see a seed.”
“I see the sun.”
Great for practising /s/ sounds and building sentences!

🌿 Location words 🌿
Talk about where things are:
“The worm is in the soil.”
“The leaf is on the ground.”
“Let’s look under the pot.”

🐛 Describing words 🐛
Ask your child:
“Is the leaf big or small?”
“Is the soil wet or dry?”
This builds vocabulary and describing skills!

🌻 Action words 🌻
Narrate what you’re doing together:
“We are digging.”
“You are watering.”
“The bee is flying.”

🌞 Take turns talking 🌞
Pause and give your child time to comment, ask questions, or tell you what they notice.

Language grows best through shared experiences, curiosity, and conversation — and the garden is the perfect place for all three 🌷

💙💛 World Down Syndrome Day 2026 💛💙

Today we stand together to recognise, celebrate and support people with Down syndrome — and to shine a light on this year’s important message: together against loneliness.

Communication creates connection. When we support speech, language and social skills, we help build friendships, confidence and belonging. Everyone deserves to feel seen, heard and valued.

🙋The three commonly asked questions about using Key Word Sign (KWS):

Q: Will it stop my child from speaking? 🗣️
A: Not at all! While speaking is the easiest way to communicate, using KWS can provide children with communication difficulties with opportunities to effectively interact with others. This is highly motivating, and is more likely to decrease their frustration while increasing their willingness to participate in everyday situations. ✨

Q: Can I only use KWS with children? 👶➡️🧑
A: While KWS is commonly used by young children to support their growing communication skills, school age children and adults who continue to experience communication difficulties may use KWS along with other methods of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) 💬 to create a personalised and supported system of communication.

Q: How long will it take for my child to start using the signs? ⏳
A: It is difficult to predict exactly when a child might start using KWS, and we understand that it can be hard to keep using the signs when your child doesn’t appear to be responding or engaging with you. However, it’s important to remember how children need certain levels of exposure to spoken language before they start to talk, and people who have communication difficulties are likely to need a greater amount of time before they start using KWS independently.

So, keep persevering! 💪🤟💬

What do tea parties, holidays, dress ups, and shops have in common? They’re all classic themes of pretend play! 🎭🫖🛍️

Pretend play is incredibly significant for children’s cognitive, social, and language development. On the ground, this looks like:

✨ Experimenting with different roles and life scenarios as they seek to understand the world
✨ Learning how to identify and navigate potential conflict with empathy
✨ Practising their expression and reading of emotions
✨ Using a range of vocabulary and sentence structures as they learn to interact with different communication partners (including both children and adults!)
✨ Navigating unexpected situations or reactions from others

So, the next time a child pretends to call you with a banana phone… 🍌📞 play away!

Looking for a fun, engaging book that builds speech, language AND social skills at the same time? 📚✨

'A Squash and a Squeeze' by Julia Donaldson is a fantastic choice! This repetitive, rhythmic story about a little old lady who thinks her house is too small is perfect for developing a child’s skills and supporting therapy home practice.

🗣 Speech sounds:
‘sh’ – she, sheep, hush
‘m’ – come, moo
‘k’ – cow, cluck

📚 Building vocabulary:
Size concepts – small, big, tiny, crowded

✏️ Grammar:
Using because (“She is upset because the house is small”)
Comparatives (“Now the house is bigger”)

💛 Feelings:
frustrated, overwhelmed, relieved, grateful

🤔 Perspective:
“Was the house really small?”

🧠 Problem solving

Here are some other fun ideas:
• Use toy animals as you read and talk about the story
• Draw the house before and after
• Use a box and physically “squeeze” toys in and out
• Practise retelling the story in order

A simple story with so many powerful therapy opportunities! ✨

🧱 Mini LEGO sets = BIG therapy wins 🧱
We love using mini LEGO sets (especially superhero builds) in speech therapy sessions. They’re compact, motivating, and incredibly powerful for targeting language, play, and executive functioning skills.

✨ Why mini LEGO sets work so well in therapy:
• Narrative & story grammar - create simple problem-solution stories
• WH-questions -who, what, where, why during play
• Following directions -step-by-step builds with visual support
• Turn-taking & joint attention -shared construction and play roles
• Fine motor skills -small pieces, big coordination gains
• Vocabulary & concepts -actions, emotions, spatial language
