Danny Stiel, an alumnus from the 1970's, died last week. His funeral service is at 11.30 am on Tuesday, 12th May.

Danny spent most of his working life as a senior gastroenterologist at Royal North Shore Hospital and served on the Board of the hospital.

Starting in 1988, Danny led the organisation of a World Gastroenterology Conference in Sydney. He spent two years working on what was to become Australia's largest medical conference, with 6,000 delegates attending.

Danny was later appointed Chief Medical Officer for the Sydney Olympics - a job so huge that he eventually had to take leave from the hospital to manage this task.

Danny's attention to detail set new standards for the future in the Medical side of the Olympics in Sydney.

In an article written about Danny's involvement in the Sydney Olympics, his wife Charnain was quoted :

" I was working as a nurse at Manly Hospital 25 years
ago when she first met Danny. I can
remember thinking what a really nice person he was. He was a very
good person to work with. " The article goes on to say
If anything, she describes her husband in even more glowing terms now ( late 1990s)
- as humanitarian, humble, humorous, and a hardworker not into self- promotion or airs and graces.

Over the past 18 months, a group of Danny's crewmates from the 1970's have been catching up with him regularly for lunch or dinner. chewed the fat and listened to Danny's jokes.

I was privileged to see Danny recently and took along my most recent joke - he declared it the worst joke he had ever heard. A true honour coming from Dan.

Great rower, outstanding intellect, wonderful doctor, amazing organiser, family man, warm human being, somewhat eccentric, and a great friend to his colleagues and former rowing team mates.

Funeral details below.

Photos are from 1970 and 1971 season.
