Feeling the warmer weather? UV exposure is rising – and even on cloudy days, UV rays can damage your eyes and increase the risk of macular disease.

Wearing sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays is one of the easiest ways to protect your vision.

UV damage is cumulative, so daily protection matters - whether you're gardening, walking, or just enjoying the sunshine.

Have you heard of Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS)? It’s a little-known condition that causes people with vision loss - often due to age-related macular degeneration, to experience vivid, recurrent visions known as phantom images.

These phantom images can be detailed and surreal, but they’re not a sign of mental illness.

People living with CBS can feel confused or frightened, and sadly, some are dismissed when they seek help. That’s why education and talking to your eye health professional can make a real difference.

Read this ABC News article to learn more about the experiences of Australians living with CBS and why better guidelines are urgently needed: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-09-06/calls-for-charles-bonnet-syndrome-diagnostic-guidelines/105679368

How can imaging techniques improve macular disease diagnosis and management?

One of our 2025 MDFA research grant recipients, Dr Danuta Sampson from Eye Institute and The University of Western Australia, is using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) to accelerate the development of new imaging biomarkers for macular disease.

By standardising the software that analyses OCT-A images, her research will make it faster, easier and more accurate to diagnose, and detect changes in, conditions like age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy.

This breakthrough will help doctors monitor disease progression more effectively and improve the care people living with macular conditions receive.

This Father’s Day, protect the vision that connects generations. “My father had AMD and lost his central vision." - Ita Buttrose AC OBE, Patron of Macular Disease Foundation Australia, and Ita's uncle Gerald, who just turned 102 this year, is still receiving eye injections for wet age-related macular degeneration.

AMD runs in families. If you have a parent or sibling with AMD, you have a 50% risk of getting it, too.

This Father’s Day, take 6-second to check your risk for free and encourage your loved ones to do the same at www.CheckMyMacula.com.au

PBS listing of new treatment for geographic atrophy (dry AMD). Have your say. A new treatment for geographic atrophy (dry AMD) – brand name Syfovre®, active ingredient pegcetacoplan - was registered by the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in January 2025, but it is not currently listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).

The advisory body that recommends the listing of medicines on the PBS, the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC), will consider the application for Syfovre® (pegcetacoplan) to be PBS listed at its meeting in November.

The manufacturer-proposed treatment listing is for people with geographic atrophy in both eyes, where one eye has an intact fovea (the centre of the macula) and vision is not yet affected but is threatened by the progression of the condition (the eye that can be treated), and the second eye does have central vision that is already affected by geographic atrophy progression (the eye that can’t be treated).

If you would like to have your say about the PBS listing of this treatment, you can participate in the public consultation. The PBAC welcomes input from patients, carers, health professionals, consumer groups or organisations and members of the public. The PBAC considers these public consultation inputs when making their decision about PBS-listing the treatment, in addition to the clinical and economic evidence presented by the manufacturer of the treatment.

The online survey can be accessed here: https://ohta-consultations.health.gov.au/ohta/pbac-nov-2025/consultation/subpage.2021-08-13.1345934449/

“Use your Amsler grid regularly. My wet macular degeneration in one eye snuck up on me as my other eye was compensating so well. Luckily it wasn’t too far advanced when found and injections are making headway.” – MDFA community member.

An Amsler grid is a simple tool you can use at home to monitor your central vision. Changes on the grid may be an early sign of macular disease, a leading cause of blindness in Australia.

Here’s how to use it:

1. Wear the glasses or contact lenses you normally use for reading
2. Hold the Amsler grid at normal reading distance in a well-lit room
3. Fully cover one eye then use the uncovered eye to focus on the centre dot
4. Repeat the process with the other eye.
