Sydney University Muslim Students' Association (SUMSA)

Sydney University Muslim Students' Association (SUMSA) Sydney University Muslim Students Association (SUMSA) is the formal student body representing Muslim students on campus.

What started off as a humble effort by a small group of Muslim students and staff in the summer of 1972 has flourished into an integral part of every Muslim studying at the University of Sydney. Muslim students in the beginning of SUMSA’s fruitful history, was largely comprised of international students from Malaysia, Indonesia and Bangladesh who required the establishment of Jummu’ah prayers. So by the will of Allah, our first Annual General Meeting in the summer of 1972 adopted the SUMSA constitution and elected our primary office bearers. The following years saw an influx of Muslim students, contributing to the growing need of a permanent prayer room and events catering to spiritual and educational development. In 1975, there was a unique rotational system for training purposes, where each SUMSA member had to take turn in acting as a Khateeb, Imam and Mu-Addin, building not only public speaking dexterity but also sermon preparation skills. This was further carried out by established Friday night study circles and regular lunchtime talks and seminars on religious topics and current affairs. The year of 1990 saw the successful attainment for a small but permanent room from the Student’s Union for Zuhur and Asr prayers, committee meetings and for maintaining the SUMSA office. Yet this was not sufficient for the ever growing Muslim population on campus. Thus followed the allocation of two permanent rooms in the Old Teachers College as prayer facilities. Today, SUMSA continues to host weekly halaqa’s, dawah stalls and the annual Islamic Awareness Week. The number of attendees at Friday prayers have increased close to 500, with the shura working constantly to meet the ever growing needs of the community.

🕌 TALES OF THE UMMAH - PALESTINE 🇵🇸

On Tuesday, the brothers had their second halaqa as part of the Tales of the Ummah series, focusing on the plight of the Palestinian people 🇵🇸

Almost 80 years of occupation, decades of settler colonialism, and two years of genocide in Gaza. This is the state of our brothers and sisters living in Palestine 🩸

Despite this hardship, the Muslims of Palestine have stood firm against their Zionist occupiers, knowing that they are on the blessed lands of Al Quds.

May Allah SWT liberate the Palestinian people, and deal with those who desecrate our beloved Masjid Al Aqsa.

🕌 TALES OF THE UMMAH - ROHINGYA 🇲🇲

Last Tuesday, the brothers had a halaqa on the plight of the Rohingya, a Muslim minority group in Myanmar.

The Rohingya have faced decades of persecution by the Burmese military junta and more recently, a genocide in which over a million Muslims have been ethnically cleansed from Myanmar 🩸

The Rohingya have endured one of the worst genocides in living memory simply because they believe in Allah SWT, all because they utter "Laa ilaaha illallah" ☝️

While the Rohingya have been oppressed by the Myanmar government because of their Muslim identity, their tawwakul in Allah SWT has also given them strength to endure through the hardship ⛓️

The Rohingya will achieve their freedom some day, inshaAllah. But as Muslims, we must raise our voices for those who are being oppressed.

Please share this post, donate to Rohingya charity organisations, and spread awareness 📣

🕌 TALES OF THE UMMAH
A Special Halaqa Series

Starting tomorrow, there will be a three-week special halaqa series on the stories of our ummah, tales of hardship, resistance against tyranny, and faith in Allah SWT ☝️

With Ramadan over, now is more than ever to become aware of what the Muslim world is like today, focusing in particular on Rohingya 🇲🇲, Palestine 🇵🇸, and Turkey 🇹🇷

🍕 Food will be served after the halaqa!

How much are we willing to donate? 🇵🇸

$22000 was raised last year for Palestine

$15000 in 2024

Our brothers and sisters in Gaza continue to endure under oppression and starvation, despite the so-called ceasefire 🩸

If we were able to raise tens of thousands of dollars over the years, how much are we willing to give now?

We are in the final ten nights of Ramadan. Donate generously.
