Obesity is more than willpower

Our body is shaped by biology, emotions, stress, and more. It is not just higher calorie food choices. Research from UTS shows how our brains can become wired to crave high-fat and high-sugar foods even when we no longer enjoy them or are no longer hungry.

I could watch the beautiful jacaranda tree blossoms for hours this time if year. Looking at the beautiful vibrant blossoms as they flow gently through the wind, like rain. This is magical and fantastical, whimsical and free.

✨ Grief, Connection and Renewal in Cozumel ✨

I recently travelled to Cozumel, Mexico for a deeply moving Torah scroll dedication in memory of loved ones who had passed. Surrounded by more than fifty members of my Hasidic family, I felt grief and joy intertwine, the ache of absence and the beauty of legacy held in the same breath.
As the Torah was carried through the streets with music, dancing and song, I was reminded that rituals can hold the full spectrum of emotion including love, loss, gratitude and hope. They help us weave grief into life, rather than trying to leave it behind.
Across the world, cultures express this truth differently, through prayer, dance, song and story, but the purpose is shared, to honour, to connect and to begin again. 💜

When emotions feel intense or overwhelming, one of the most effective ways to cope is to gently return to the present moment.

At Purple Rain Psychology in Double Bay, we use mindfulness strategies based on Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) to help clients manage distress.

One simple yet powerful tool is the Five Senses Exercise:

✅ Name five things you can see
✅ Listen for a few sounds around you
✅ Notice how your body feels against the chair or floor
✅ Smell something calming like tea or fresh air
✅ Slowly taste something and bring your full attention to it

Mindfulness through the senses is not about avoiding emotion. It is about creating calm so you can respond rather than react.
