Light duties are temporary modifications to a worker's role to allow them to maintain their workplace connection while recovering from an injury or illness.

They are designed to be part of a rehabilitation plan and should gradually increase in intensity back to full duties.

During our roundtable discussion, Leon Leveque from Catholic Healthcare shared how this looks in practice in aged care, explaining that when home and community workers are unfortunately injured, his team will often tailor suitable light duties so the worker can stay connected to the workplace within their current medical capacity.

Current statistics tell us that it is 21 days before an injured worker gets any support from a rehabilitation provider.

By introducing timely clinical guidance, identifying psychosocial risks early and supporting clear treatment pathways, organisations can improve recovery outcomes.

This early window is a catalyst for recovery.

By mapping out a coordinated treatment plan from day 1 (not day 21) employers can significantly reduce claim escalation and associated costs.

Injury risk isn’t evenly spread.

In 2023-24, just 4 industries made up over half of all serious claims, even though they only represent about a third of the workforce.

Workers in Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing face the highest risk, with serious claims almost 50% higher than the average across all industries.

When choosing a safety partner, it’s important to work with one who understands how your specific sector is affected and can translate real-world risk into effective safety outcomes.

Australia maintains a work-related injury rate of approximately 3.5%, which remains significantly lower than the global average of 12.1%.

Yet, that 3.5% still represents hundreds of thousands of Australians every year whose lives and careers are suddenly interrupted by injury.

Findings from Safe Work Australia reveal that without work-related injuries, Australia’s economy would be $28.6 billion larger every single year.

Early intervention is the most effective lever we have to protect our people and our profits.

28/01/2026

When people drive their own recovery, they return to work twice as often, yet so much of the current system feels like it is designed to talk at people rather than with them.

For someone recovering from an injury, that loss of agency is often heavier than the physical pain itself.

Work is therapeutic, but only when it feels meaningful and safe.

When we empower a worker to say "I can handle this task today, and I’m working toward that one for next week," we are building the self-efficacy that actually sustains long term wellbeing.
