Hello everyone!

During these uncertain times, I will be continuing to offer my consultations over the phone. Right now, it's more important than ever to boost your immunity and keep "at risk" health conditions under control, such as diabetes, cardio-vascular problems and respiratory diseases.

Hope you and your loved ones are keeping healthy - this period is only temporary and we need to stay strong and self-isolate to protect ourselves and people that are at high-risk.

Although we are stuck at home, let's use this time as an opportunity to connect with our kids and family, and practice more self-care.

In light of staying positive, here is some good news I found:

THE POWER OF OMEGA 3

How would you know if you and your family needed more omega 3? The amount of fish you eat each week can give you a clue. If fish isn't a favorite and you don't take a supplement, chances are you're low in omega 3. Here we look at why omega 3 is very important and how to get enough in your diet.

GOOD FOR YOUR HEART AND BLOOD – Omega 3 lowers triglyceride levels, raises HDL, (good) cholesterol, helps prevent narrowing of the arteries and being an anti-inflammatory, also thins the blood and improves circulation to the heart and other organs.

BENEFITS FOR YOUR BRAIN – Omega 3 is vital for normal brain function and development. Low levels of omega 3 have been linked to anxiety, depression, Alzheimer's disease and other cognitive impairments.
EASES PAIN – Studies of rheumatoid arthritis sufferers, whose diets have been supplemented with fish oil, have demonstrated improvements from the nagging symptoms of tender joints, morning stiffness, fatigue and poor grip strength.

WHAT ELSE IS IT GOOD FOR? Omega 3 is good for your eyes, protecting them against macular degeneration. There have also been some studies showing improvements in children given omega 3 for conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia and behavior disorders.

ARE YOU GETTING ENOUGH? There are two types of omega 3: short chain (ALA) and long chain (DHA, EPA and DPA). However, it’s the long chain omega 3, particularly DHA and EPA that are lacking in our diet and are vital for good health and wellbeing. ALA is found in linseeds, walnuts, olives and some vegetables. DHA and EPA are found mostly in fish such as salmon, trout, sardines, silver perch and mackerel. The suggested daily dietary target is 500mg of combined EPA and DHA, which is enough for adults to maintain overall health.

EAT TO BEAT....CANCER

Cancer claims more than 47,000 lives each year in Australia. Statistics show that over the last 30 years cancer has been slowly on the increase. It has been estimated that 40 per cent of cancers are in some way related to diet.
The good news is that we can prevent cancer and someday we will even be able to cure it.

The following are the latest generally accepted FOOD GUIDELINES FOR PREVENTION OF CANCER.
1. Cut back on fats, especially saturated fat. They are found mostly in meat, dairy products, pastry, snack food and fried take away food.
2. Eat more vegetables and fruits. Berries, cruciferous vegetables (such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, turnip and horseradish), tomatoes and dark green leafy vegetables are especially potent cancer fighters.
3. Add fiber to your diet. Every 10 g of daily fiber intake reduces the risk of colon cancer by 10%.
Good sources include whole grains, fruits and vegetables, nuts and legumes. Aim for 25 g daily.
4. Minimize salt-cured and smoked foods such as smoked fish, hot dogs, corned beef, bacon and ham. Such foods contain nitrates and nitrites compounds, that lead to a stomach cancer.
5. Eat more fish that is high in omega 3 fatty acids, such as salmon, atlantic mackerel, sardines. They reduce inflammation that is linked to cancer.
6. Flavor food with immune boosting herbs and spices such as ginger, garlic, turmeric, basil, rosemary and coriander.
7. Minimize browned and charred foods. Cooking meat, chicken, fish and vegetables at temperatures over 150°C can creates carcinogenic substances.
8. Avoid being overweight because obesity raises the chances of hormone dependent cancers of the breast, cervix, endometrial, prostate, pancreatic and ovarian.
