During the Senate estimates last month, I was disturbed by the comment Ms Penny Shakespeare made that Dose Administration Aids (DAAs) may not be necessary in aged care as nurses can help residents take their medications from boxes and bottles.
There’s a huge value in community pharmacy providing medications in DAAs in aged care that has many health and safety risk benefits for the staff and residents at the facility.
For comparison, I collected the medications for one section of an aged care facility, 23 residents.
These are the regular, packed medications ONLY. It does not include the non-packed items. No creams, eye drops, liquids, inhalers, patches. With double dispensing, this is what we would be expecting a facility to carry in their medication trolley to be administered ONLY by a registered nurse. This would easily take 2.5 hours for a breakfast round!
The second photo shows the same 23 residents’ medication in Webstercare’s Unit Dose 7 System. One week’s worth of medication dispensed into a DAA and checked by a pharmacist against the resident’s most current doctor’s orders. The medication can be administered by competent care staff under supervision of a registered nurse. The breakfast round would take 45min, ensuring residents received their medication safely, accurately and on time.
