SAVE this post as your go-to list for some quick and easy swaps I commonly recommend in clinic to my clients managing epilepsy in children.

Eating well can support brain health and help reduce triggers for some people with epilepsy. Small, simple swaps in your everyday shopping can make a big difference!

Try these swaps:
✨ Supermarket bread → Sourdough
✨ Regular pasta → Splendier (Konjac range) noodles or pulse pasta
✨ Margarine → Real butter
✨ Anything from Kellogg’s → Paleo granola
✨ Low‑fat yoghurt → Greek or coconut yoghurt
✨ Milk → Nut mylk base

These swaps are about nourishing the body and brain, reducing unnecessary additives, and supporting overall wellbeing.

Eating for epilepsy doesn’t have to be restrictive, it’s about making smarter choices at the supermarket.

Supporting infants with food allergies? This one's for you ⬇️

Approximately 1 in 10 infants develop a proven food allergy within the first year of life.

Australia has one of the highest rates of food allergy globally, and we’re continuing to see increasing complexity in how these allergies present in clinical practice - often alongside eczema, gut symptoms and immune dysregulation 😢

For practitioners supporting infants and young children, staying up to date with current, evidence-informed approaches is essential.

This includes understanding early risk factors, appropriate assessment and testing, the role of nutrition and the microbiome, and how to guide families through safe, practical management without unnecessary restriction or fear.

Want to learn more about treating allergies in children?

Join Emma Sutherland at the Paediatrics in Practice Summit for practical, clinically relevant insights you can apply straight away.

PANS/PANDAS isn’t just a diagnosis. It’s a child who changed overnight.

Sudden OCD. Restrictive eating. Rage. Anxiety. Bedwetting. School refusal.

And as practitioners, it can feel overwhelming to know where to start.

In this session at Paediatrics in Practice 2026, Lisa Moane won’t be delivering a textbook-style information dump.

Instead, she’ll be walking you through:
1️⃣What PANS/PANDAS actually looks like in real clinic settings
2️⃣How to recognise red flags early
3️⃣The functional drivers you need to investigate
4️⃣And how to practically support these children step-by-step

This is case-based, clinically relevant training, the kind that builds confidence, not just knowledge.

If you’re seeing sudden neuropsychiatric shifts in children and want a clearer framework for assessment and treatment, this session is not one to miss.

If you’re trying to support your child with epilepsy and dietary changes feel overwhelming, please know this, you’re not failing.

Their diet doesn’t have to look perfect to be supportive. What matters most is building meals that are nourishing, realistic, and gentle on your child’s gut and nervous system.

🥚 Build meals around a solid protein base to support blood sugar and satiety.

🥔 Choose gluten-free carbs such as potato and sweet potato

🥥 Use MCT oil strategically: a simple way to support ketone production without overcomplicating meals.

🌱 Don’t forget fibre & prebiotics: essential for gut health, always best supported with practitioner guidance.

🧾 Read ingredient labels to watch for additives like E621, yeast extract, soy extract and artificial colourings.

🍳 Cook from scratch where you can

Start simple.
Focus on whole foods.
Make changes gradually.

I’m so excited to welcome Emma Sutherland to the Paediatrics in Practice Summit 🧸✨

Emma will be sharing her approach to allergies in children, cutting through confusion to provide a clear, practical clinical framework for assessing and managing allergic presentations in practice.

With over two decades of clinical experience, Emma brings depth, clarity and real-world insight to paediatric care.

She’s a clinical naturopath, nutritionist, podcast host and author, and the founder of Studio You, an award-winning clinic supporting women and children with immune, gut and allergic conditions.

Emma has trained extensively in paediatrics, including MAPS (Medical Academy of Paediatric Special Needs) and MINDD Practitioner training, and is deeply respected for her work with eczema, food intolerances, immune dysfunction and gut health in children.

What I love most about Emma’s approach is how grounded it is, she blends evidence-based medicine with genuine empathy, shaped not only by years in clinic but also by her experience as a mum herself.

If you’re a practitioner wanting more confidence and clarity when supporting children with allergies, this is a session you won’t want to miss.

Many anti-epileptic medications can alter vitamin D metabolism in the body ‼️

Vitamin D plays a key role in calcium absorption in the gut, so when vitamin D levels are reduced, calcium absorption can also be impaired.

Over time, this can impact bone mineral density, increasing the risk of weaker bones and fractures, particularly in growing children 🦴

This doesn’t mean medications should be stopped, they are often life-saving.
But it does mean we need to be proactive.

In clinical practice, this may involve:
1️⃣Monitoring vitamin D levels
2️⃣Ensuring adequate calcium intake from food
3️⃣Supporting gut health to optimise absorption
4️⃣Weight-bearing movement where appropriate
5️⃣Individualised nutrition support alongside medical care

Understanding these downstream effects allows us to support the whole child, not just manage seizures.

Join my upcoming Program 'Treating Epilepsy Naturally' to learn nutrition-based strategies that can help support your child on anti-epileptic medication.

These are some of my go-to key supportive nutrients for my epilepsy clients...

1️⃣ Lions Mane- increases NGF & BDNF, reduces neuroinflammation and regulates gut microbiome communities (It’s important to choose an alcohol extract, as this is required to extract the hericenones, the compounds responsible for supporting neurotrophin production.)

2️⃣ Vitamin D - plays a role in immune balance, neurological health and seizure threshold (often depleted with long-term AED use)

3️⃣ Activated B vitamins – essential for methylation, energy production and neurotransmitter metabolism (commonly impacted by anti-epileptic medications)

4️⃣ Magnesium - supports nervous system calming, muscle function and neuronal stability

5️⃣ Zinc - important for immune health, gut integrity and neurological development

6️⃣ PHGG + SB - to support the microbiome, gut-brain signalling and nutrient absorption

Many children with epilepsy experience nutrient depletion due to medications, restricted diets, gut dysfunction or increased neurological demand which is why targeted nutritional support can be so important.

This is never about “throwing supplements at the problem,” but about careful assessment, testing where appropriate, and addressing root contributors.

When my daughter was first diagnosed with epilepsy, medication saved her life.

We’ve used anti-epileptic medications in our own family, and I’ll always be grateful for them.

But what I wasn’t prepared for were the side effects, the stacking of multiple medications, and the lack of guidance on how to support her body through it all.

No one explained what those medications could deplete.

No one talked about nutrition, gut health, sleep, or how to protect her developing brain alongside treatment.

I had to learn that part myself.

That journey, as a mum and as a nutritionist, is what shaped Treating Epilepsy Naturally.

This program isn’t about shame, blame or replacing medical care. It’s about understanding what’s happening in your child’s body, being informed about medication side effects, and knowing how to support them better with nutrition and lifestyle strategies that actually fit real life.

If you’re walking this road and want guidance that feels grounded, compassionate and practical, this program was created for you.
