At Ramsay Mental Health, our people are the reason patients feel supported from the moment they arrive.

Meet Vanessa - Group Therapist:

What inspired you to work in mental health?
40 years ago I attended a public meeting in a town hall where a psychiatrist talked about the de-institutionalization of public mental health facilities, and the to integrate mental health inpatients back into the community and in society. As a social worker, I felt I needed to be a part of this process and represent the people in institutions with whom I had volunteered support for many years. I went on a steering committee and from there became more and more interested in the day-to-day needs of people suffering mental health issues, their careers. I have worked in the mental health system since then.

What’s one thing you wish more people knew about your role?
I wish that people were aware of the breath and extent of help a social worker can give not only in facilitating groups, but in supporting people practically, in talking through their issues, and helping them to know that they need not suffer a mental health condition on their own.

What do you love most about your job?
I love all aspects of my job. Working with in a multidisciplinary team, towards the patients’ recovery and return to a fulfilling life, beyond their mental health challenges. I love the variety of presentations of patients at different stages in their mental health journey, and the insights and growth that comes from attending group sessions

Meet Jess - Group Therapist/Art Therapist:

What’s one thing you wish more people knew about your role?
One thing to know about art therapy, is that you actually don’t have to be good at making art! It’s a common misconception. Art therapy is an evidence based profession that combines psychology and the art-making process with a focus on personal growth, rather than artistic skill or aesthetic judgement. The creative process contributes to fostering healing and improving mental health and wellbeing.

What do you love most about your job?
To be alongside patients and support their recovery journey in the group therapy program. To witness patients stories and self discovery in the art therapy space is always a privilege.

In your experience, what helps people feel safe when seeking mental health care?
By creating a safe and inclusive space free of judgement for people to share what is happening for them.

Behind every patient story is a team that truly cares. We’re shining a light on the people who create safe, welcoming spaces at Ramsay Clinics - learn what inspires them and how they help others feel supported and empowered.

What’s one thing you wish more people knew about your role?

How important establishing a therapeutic relationship is with clients, where they feel safe and able to voice what is working and what is not working for them in therapy. Without a safe and solid therapeutic relationship, I believe no therapy can be effective, no matter how skillful the clinician maybe.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about reaching out for support?

It’s ok to feel scared and uncertain, you don’t have to be in crisis to seek support, waiting for crisis is like waiting to get very sick that you require to go to ED before seeing a doctor. Seeking mental health support doesn’t have to be accessed when you are in high distress and overwhelmed.

What’s one small thing anyone can do to support their mental health each day?

I believe it is often understated how daily tasks of daily living can contribute positively to our mental health when they are maintained. For example, making the bed, brushing your teeth, going for a short walk, eating a balanced meal, can all contribute to feeling a sense of achievement and control in our daily lives that can help reduce our vulnerability to extremes when experiencing painful emotions.

Meet Ravinder:

What do you love most about your job?
I am doing my graduate year in mental health in Ramsay Clinic Albert Road and this gives me the opportunity to make therapeutic relationships with clients at some of their most vulnerable moments. Its incredible rewarding to support individuals through their recovery journey and see even small steps forward. I appreciate how much I am learning not just clinically but also about myself developing resilience, empathy and strong communication skills. The team support and supervision along my grade year has been invaluable in helping me grow both professionally and personally. I am extremely thankful to Ramsay Clinic Albert Road to give me this opportunity.

What’s it’s like working in a mental health clinic?
As a grad nurse working in a mental health clinic the experience has been incredibly eye opening and fulfilling. I support client’s dealing with a wide range of mental health issues like depression, psychosis, and substance abuse. My role involves administrating medication, monitoring mental state, supporting recovery plans, and most importantly making therapeutic relationship. It can be challenging at times, especially during crisis. But I have learned so much about communication, empathy and staying calm under pressure. I think I am really making difference with the team support and supervision.

What makes a clinic feel like a safe and welcoming place?
As per Ramsay motto” People caring for people”, when clients enter Ramsay they feel safe and welcoming place because of the supportive environment created by both staff and systems. From the moment the clients walk in, there a calm, respectful atmosphere. Staff are trauma informed, nonjudgmental and genuinely committed to person centered care. Safety is the priority through clear boundaries, regular risk assessments and collaborative team communication.

Meet Natasha:
What role do mental health nurses play in someone’s recovery journey?
As a mental health nurse, I believe I play a supportive role throughout someone’s recovery journey. I work closely with clients during their inpatient stays and provide care and understanding that goes beyond their admission, helping them practice and develop skills like distress tolerance, and holistic recovery support through the lens of nursing. I’m committed to providing neuroaffirming and gender-sensitive care, ensuring every person feels seen, respected, and supported for who they are. I advocate for their wishes in care while encouraging them to take an active role in their own recovery. I’m passionate about reducing the stigma around mental health and creating a safe, understanding space where people feel comfortable reaching out for help and support no matter their background.

What’s one thing you wish more people knew about your role?
One thing I wish more people knew about my role is how much we focus on recognising each individual’s unique needs and respecting their personal viewpoints and mental health knowledge. While the core of treatment may be similar for many, mental health nursing tailors care to each person’s emotional, social, and psychological wellbeing—not just medication. Building open, trusting therapeutic relationships is key, helping clients feel safe to share their struggles. Mental health nurses are involved in empowering recovery by collaborating with clients and care teams on personalised care planning, education, and advocacy, ensuring holistic support throughout their journey.

What’s one small thing anyone can do to support their mental health each day?
One small thing that really helps support your mental health each day is simply talking to the people around you—friends, family, or anyone you trust. Chatting about your day, how you’re feeling, or what’s on your mind helps build stronger connections and makes it easier to ask for support when you need it. Being honest in these conversations helps create supportive relationships where everyone feels understood and valued. It also makes setting boundaries around your needs and comfort easier. Just keeping those lines of communication open can make a big difference in how supported you feel.

“I don’t feel like myself anymore.”
Depression is more than sadness, it can affect every part of a person’s life, from how they think to how they move through the day.
Things to look for:
• Loss of interest in things once enjoyed
• Persistent low mood
• Feeling hopeless or helpless
• Changes in appetite or weight
• Sleeping too much or too little
• Withdrawal from others
• Fatigue or low energy
• Thoughts of self-harm or su***de
Check in with those around you. Sometimes the strongest people are the ones silently struggling.

Meet Sarah:

What advice would you give to someone thinking about reaching out for support?
Reaching out for support is an antidote to debilitating fear or shame; it is courageous and creates the opportunity for effective change.

What do you love most about your job?
What I love most about my job is connecting with people in a meaningful way. I enjoy getting to know people and being trusted to support people through challenging experiences. The most rewarding part of my job is when I get to see people feeling very different after therapy compared to when they started out.

In your experience, what helps people feel safe when seeking mental health care?
I find that a feeling of safety is created when somebody listens to another person deeply and without judgement. This is something that we try hard to create for people coming to our service.

Meet Kevin:
What inspired you to work in mental health?
I’ve always been passionate about mental health! It affects us all in one way or another. I’ve had my tough days as of those I care most about. Seeing su***de become an answer for so many has never sat right with me. So I thought, how can I help? Helping people is something I consider a privilege and I enjoy coming to work everyday.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about reaching out for support?
Do it! The worst part is the anticipation. Once you reach out we can take the reigns. It’s cliché but a problem shared really is a problem halved. I think you’ll find it’s not as scary as you think, we’re people caring for people. I have yet to meet a person who has regretted looking for help.

What role do mental health nurses play in someone’s recovery journey?
We’re there for you on a human level, in the big bad world of doctors and specialists – nurses are the ones working in the middle – there to explain all the jargon, console family members, advocate on your behalf. We’re there for all that comes up in a day - a chat, making a cuppa, listening but are also the first ones to respond in a crisis. A friendly face in the sea of white coats.
