This world moves fast, and it moves fast at surface level. There so much noise about how we SHOULD be moving our bodies
We’re rewarded for punishing and shrinking our bodies without really understanding them. Encouraged to panic about the latest advice on strength and bone density, overriding our own intuition in the process. We choose the hardest workouts with the quickest results, and we’ve learned to conflate “self-care” with time spent at the prettiest gyms or following the advice of the loudest commentators.

If you’re reentering the exercise space or haven’t moved for a while, the OVERWHELM can make it feel like there’s no room to just get started with SOMETHING. By no means am I suggesting we stick our heads in the sand—knowledge is power—but what use is all this information if it feels paralysing?

What if getting started could look like:
✨ Finding a supportive environment with skilled movement teachers, part of a greater network of health and exercise professionals
✨ Top-to-toe body conditioning classes that build longevity in a holistic way, incorporating: balance, control, coordination, breathing, mobility AND strength training.
✨ Building a dialogue with your body so you can actually learn what you like and what feels good in your body, and what is challenging for you
✨ Reaping the benefits of a commitment to deep learning about your body and how to take care of it

Respecting your body enough to say yes to something you actually ENJOY is an act of radical self-care. It’s a rebellion against the “burnout” culture of modern fitness, the patriarchy and unrelenting noise of the internet.
If you’re looking for a way to just start…Trial 3 group reformer classes for $60. Come rebel with us.

I’m Rachael, the main woman behind Room For Movement Pilates Studio and I suppose this is a bit of a reintroduction to me and the business I’ve built. I’m a nature lover, traveller, deep thinker and a lover of all things human movement. I try to bring a strong moral compass, care and kindness into my business at every turn, and as I reflect on a decade in business here’s a little bit about how I got this business going…

In 2015, I didn’t have a business plan. I didn’t have a financial strategy, and I’d never even heard of a profit and loss. I was just a young woman who had found a form of therapy in Pilates for my mind, body, and spirit—and I wanted to share that with others. I never manifested, planned, or envisioned that it would grow into what it’s become. But I did commit myself to showing up to teach the work, to learning and growing in my field, and it grew and grew.

Eventually my inability to say “no” led to burnout, mental health challenges, and financial woes post pandemic. As it turns out, building a business, on intuition only, with no plans and no experience is a path fraught with challenges: I can’t (and won’t) romanticise the buckets and buckets of resilience and determination it’s taken to make this business last.

But through every season- I’ve tried to run Room for Movement from my heart—mostly because I don’t know how else to do it. (Wonder what magic will happen in the next few years when we mix that heart with a bit more vision!)

✨ If Pilates with us is on your radar it might be nice to know that your classes won’t ever feel transactional- I’m personally invested in positive movement experiences for everyone who comes through our door.

A moment in time to acknowledge and capture the essence of a decade in this small business. It’s taken me the past week just to recover from my debut in public speaking and to process all the emotion from our birthday celebrations…so much love in the room. Thank you all for coming- I sincerely hope I didn’t miss out on saying hello to anyone 💙

Community. It’s not the reason I started Room For Movement but it’s the reason that plenty of you have stayed- and I’m so grateful.

From a ONE woman show in 2015 to team of TEN…there’s been a few variations of the RfM team on this decade long journey: some have been for a short time, more have stayed for a long time- but all of them for a good time. This business is nothing without its teachers ✨🙌✨

I have respect for each of these women and their expertise as movement teachers- but more so I respect them for their investment in our workplace culture of kindness, sharing and commitment to deep learning. It creates safety, space for exploration and creativity, and THIS is the magic ingredient that folk come back for time and time again.
I pinch myself often. 🍀

How lucky I am to share my working life with these women, and through our work to impact womxn in our community in a positive and tangible way.
💙💙💙

Room for Movement stands with First Nations people on Invasion Day, and every day. ❤️💛🖤

January 26th marks the anniversary of invasion and the beginning of an era of massacres, terror, dispossession, and policies designed to erase the existence of First Nations people. Today we acknowledge the resilience of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and the grief they carry with them to this day.

Sovereignty was never ceded. This always was and always will be Aboriginal land.

To the dream team 💛☺️

Some actual photographic evidence that we DO, very occasionally, get out of the leggings to spend time together.
And that we ARE infact thriving in business- despite a social media hiatus for most of the year 🤷‍♀️

A change of pace in the group studio with the addition of our new HYBRID high intensity jumpboard classes.

These moderate to high intensity classes are crafted to improve cardiovascular health, boost power and coordination, and enhance bone density, offering a well-rounded movement experience on top of your weekly Pilates classes.
Given the global impact of heart disease on women, we're excited to bring you a class that fills such an important gap.
With the usual support of your teacher, let's work towards the recommended 5 hours of moderate intensity exercise per week.

Want to feel stronger in a plank?

There are plenty of reasons why getting into the plank might be challenging for you: leg strength, core control, shoulder stability, and even big toe extension!
If you’re free on Sunday I’d love to have you join my masterclass “Improve Your Plank in 60 Minutes".

Maybe the words “sixty”, “minutes” and “plank” all in the same sentence sounds a bit intense but this IS NOT 60 minutes of planking.
Not. Even. Close.
It’s a whole body mat class that will help you understand the dynamics of this challenging exercise and suss out your own personal areas of improvement.

Book via the bio link.
Rach 💛

Got sore feet? A bunion? Plantarfasciitis? Achilles tendinopathy? Sore hip or back that you can’t get on top of?

For most of us our feet are the very foundations of our movement- but we pay very little attention to them until they’re causing bother. For that reason they feature heavily in all of our sessions & classes at Room For Movement.

Issues at our foundations can impact the way our whole body functions, and can easily be the root cause of a painful knee, hip, or spine which is why I’m so passionate about integrating footwork into EVERY single class.

This epic group and I took a deep dive into foot function a couple of weeks ago- but I’m already planning the next one: If you’d like to reduce foot pain, improve balance, and strengthen from your hips down, comment STRONGFEET below and I’ll pop you on the priority list for the next one!

Room For Movement is a friendly Pilates studio in the heart of Sydney’s Inner West. We are proud to welcome people of all ages, sizes, backgrounds and fitness levels into our studio, and into our community where we’re passionate about good movement, and feeling strong and able. For you, that might mean being able to climb the stairs with ease, finally being able to touch your toes, moving your body pre and post-nataly, or rebuilding strength after an injury. There are many other ways in which Pilates can help people to move and feel better so give us a bell and find out if we’re the right fit for you.
