RANZCR is excited to share that Dr Hyun Soo Ko, radiologist at Peter Mac, is the first Australian – and first German – to receive the globally renowned RSNA Research Seed Grant to overcome cancer cachexia.

In collaboration with Columbia University and UCLA, Dr Ko's groundbreaking study combines AI, radiologic imaging, and epigenetic blood analysis to develop new tools for early detection and better management of this devastating condition.

💡 Cancer cachexia affects up to 80% of advanced cancer patients and contributes to nearly one-third of all cancer deaths - yet it remains difficult to diagnose early.

This international, interdisciplinary research marks a major step forward in improving outcomes and quality of life for patients.

🌍 A proud moment for Peter Mac, and a global milestone in radiology research.

It is the 90th Anniversary of RANZCR! 🎉

This year, we will be diving into history with some fun facts about our College.

1964 – On 2 September, the Queen grants the College its own Coat of Arms, with Lynx and Griffin supporters and motto: Lumen Afferimus Morbis – We Cast Light on Disease.

The following symbols are incorporated in the RANZCR crest:
💠Colours reflect those used for gowns worn by members and the President
💠The cross in the centre of the shield represents X-rays
💠The stars on the shield signify the Southern Cross to indicate the Australasian location
💠The flaming torch represents learning and research
💠The crown composed of rays and upraised skeletal arm represent diagnostic radiology
💠A griffin as one supporter is depicted with rays emanating from its body to represent therapeutic radiation oncology
💠A lynx as the other supporter as it was considered by the Ancients to have eyesight so powerful it could see through solid objects
💠A silver fern and wattle around the necks of the lynx and griffin representing New Zealand and Australia.

“Lumen Afferimus Morbis – We Cast Light on Disease.” Was suggested by Dr Colin Macdonald, was selected but not without protest regarding the accuracy of the Latin. Advice from the College of Arms and also Prof. A. J. Dunston, Professor of Latin at the University of Sydney, was that the suggested motto was in order and suitable.

It is the 90th Anniversary of RANZCR! 🎉

This year, we will be diving into history with some fun facts about our College.

📆1953 – Dr. Alwyn Tom Hays Nisbet passed away.

Some of his words that show his passion and drive for the formation of the College:
‘… the formation of an educational body, the foundation of a scientific institution constituted in Australia and New Zealand surely means so much for the future and for those who come after us. Let us assist in placing the science, the ethics, the personality of Radiology on the face of the world, at least south of the equator…’

"Hearing an interview on the radio by chance opened my eyes to new treatment options."

During August, we've been revisiting our Interventional Radiology (IR) and Interventional Neuroradiology (INR) series and how these disciplines provide a transformative solution to help redefine patient care.

The impact of IR and INR can be best appreciated through the lens of real stories and real results.
