🌟 Out and About with Spencer Health! 🌟

On Monday, our CEO and Clinical Psychologist Emma Spencer was out and about presenting at the School Counselling Service Conference 🎤✨

Emma shared The ACT Action Path — a model she developed to deliver Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in a developmentally appropriate and engaging way for kids and teens. This session focused on using the model as a brief intervention in school settings, and it was fantastic to receive such positive feedback from passionate school psychologists in attendance.

Spencer Health is committed to sharing knowledge and supporting mental health professionals doing incredible work across all settings — especially in schools, where support can make such a big difference. 💛

Some of our Spencer Health team caught up over the weekend for some delicious Yum Cha, great company, and lots of laughs! 💛

Private practice can sometimes feel isolating—but not here at Spencer Health. We prioritise social connection and community, because we know that when our team feels supported and valued, our clients feel it too.

We're proud to be an employer of choice, where care isn’t just something we offer our clients—it’s something we show to each other every day.

A happy, connected team = a beautiful, welcoming environment for all who walk through our doors. 🫶

🧠 Word of the Week: Boundaries

Boundaries are the limits we set to protect our time, energy, wellbeing, and values.
They help define what’s okay and what’s not okay in our relationships and daily lives.

Healthy boundaries can sound like:
💬 “I’m not available after 6pm.”
💬 “That topic feels uncomfortable for me.”
💬 “I need some space right now, but I care about you.”

Setting boundaries isn’t selfish — it’s self-respect.
It’s how we teach others how to treat us, and how we protect our own mental health.

🧡 Reminder: You can be kind and have strong boundaries.

🧠✨ Naming emotions gives kids power.
When children can name what they’re feeling, they can begin to understand it – and eventually manage it.
Emotional language builds self-awareness, empathy, and regulation.
Start small: “You look frustrated. Want to talk about it?”

🧠✨ New on the blog: Recognising Autism in Girls

Why are so many autistic girls missed or misdiagnosed? And what can we do to better support them?

In this insightful new blog, Natasha Binns, Clinical Psychology Registrar, explores the reasons autism often goes unrecognised in girls—including masking, social mimicry, and outdated diagnostic criteria—and offers guidance on how to seek support and advocate effectively.

If you're a parent, educator, or clinician wanting to understand more about how autism presents in girls and why so many fly under the radar, this is a must-read.

🧠 Word of the Week: Co-regulation

Co-regulation is the process of calming or regulating our emotions with the support of someone else.

For children (and even adults!), it often sounds like:
💬 “I’m here with you.”
💬 “Let’s take some deep breaths together.”
💬 “I can see you’re feeling big feelings right now.”

When someone feels overwhelmed, dysregulated, or distressed, their nervous system can “borrow” the calm of a regulated person nearby – especially someone they trust.

👫 This is why connection comes before correction – especially for neurodivergent children.
Before we expect self-regulation, we need to teach co-regulation.

You don’t need to have the perfect words – your presence, patience and calm are powerful.

😤💭 What Triggered Me?

Ever found yourself reacting strongly and not quite sure why? We all have emotional “buttons” that get pushed—especially in close relationships.

This helpful infographic from the Gottman Institute breaks down common emotional triggers, like feeling unheard, judged, disrespected, or unsafe. Recognising what triggered you is the first step toward responding with awareness instead of reacting on autopilot.

💬 A great tool for:
✔️ Couples
✔️ Parents
✔️ Teens
✔️ Anyone wanting to strengthen emotional regulation and communication

💡 Tip: Try reviewing the list when you’re calm, and reflect on which ones feel familiar. Greater self-awareness = deeper connection.

🧠 Therapy is a great space to unpack your triggers, understand their roots, and learn how to respond in ways that feel more aligned with your values.

🎉 Thursday was Steph’s birthday – and while we’re a couple of days late posting, we couldn’t let it go by without a shoutout and a few cake-filled photos! 🎂📸

Steph brings so much warmth, care, and calm to the Spencer Health team, and we’re incredibly lucky to work alongside her. 💛

We love celebrating our people—with cake, connection, and a moment to recognise the incredible humans behind the scenes.

Happy (belated) birthday, Steph! We hope you felt the love this week—and that the cake was just the beginning. 🍰🌿

Our Story

We are a Private Multi-disciplinary Paediatric Clinic situated on Sydney's Upper North Shore. Our Philosophy is that "children are not things to be moulded, but people to be unfolded" and with this in mind our Mission is to provide an uncompromising quality of service to parents, children, adolescents and families so that they may achieve their full capacity in life. Our practice values focus on providing an environment and opportunities in which to nurture our clients, from which positive growth will occur, as we support each individual's development so that they may evolve into the humans they have the potential to become.
